On some models, you may be able to "Edit" the model, and separate the materials, and from that separate the model pieces. I have done that with some of the included Vue content as well as imports from other programs.
Other models that you import may be textured, or may just have shaders. Most models I have used that weren't already Vue specific VOB files, I have had to tweak once imported. Some a little, such as Pozer files, some extensively, such as some 3ds files that have no textures included.
I think what Red Dog meant was the "split" command in edit object. This will break up the model into pieces, reference are the different materials used in the scene. May be a bit difficult in the dystopia items. What you could try as well is to use boolean functions to cut the parts off that you do not want - should work too.
Regarding other models than the ones that are provided directly in Vue native format work fine as long as they have two thibgs provided. #1 the object is separated in pieces so that you can apply your own materials to these parts. Or #2 minimum the model already has different materials applied to the parts. Then it is an easy practice to exchange these (basic) materials with the ones you want.

Quick question...
I am working on matte painting....with a dystopia model pack......but the buildings come in city grids....
Is there a way to just use 1 building instead of a whole city block?
and...
is there a way to trim off and delete a peice of the model that isnt working in the scene? (from these stock Cornacopia models)
also the Cornacopia models come wrapped in shaders, pre-textured..etc.....how do non Vue stock models work in V6? (say a ship from turbosquid?)
