Subject: Firefly no longer works in Poser 7

kathym ( ) posted Sat, 28 June 2008 at 9:39 PM · edited Mon, 03 February 2025 at 3:11 PM

After installing a second 512mb stick of memory (boosting my memory to 1 gig) FireFly has seemed to stop working all together in poser 7. It doesn't matter what setting I use - nothing happens. Is it possible that its time for a fresh install of Poser? I have both service packs installed.

My memory useage is set to allocate memory to programs & not stuff running in the back ground.

Help!

Just enjoying the Vue. :0)

Couple of things:

  1. are the sticks of memory exactly the same brand, speed, etc? Typically, when and if I upgrade, I get the next denomination up... as in: if I want to upgrade from 512 meg to 1 gig, I'll buy a one-gig stick and pop it in, replacing the 512 meg stick. That way, I know it is compatible.
  2. If you're running Windows - which most people running Poser would be - clean out tmp files, if you aren't already doing so. Might not be playing a role... but just thought I'd thow it in...

The sticks aren't the same brand - but the system recognizes and uses the extra 512 mb. I'll try cleaning out the tmp files .. are they in Poser's folder?

These instructions pertain to WindowsXP - I don't use Vista, so I wouldn't have a clue how that works.  Actually, they are wherever Windows puts your temp files. To get rid of them, do a [WINDOWSKEY F] (WindowsKey being between the [CTRL] and the [ALT] keys), selecting "All Files and Folders", and then doing a search for all your temp files by entering
*.tmp
in the "All or part of the file name" box. Make sure you open the More advanced option thingie and tick Search system folder, search hidden files and folders and search subfolders.

They can all be gotten rid of safely. If you have antivirus running, you might not be able to delete those tmp files associated with the AV program - just get rid of the others (and clear them from your recycle bin as well).

Not sure this will fix it, but it certainly can't hurt. If you use MSN Messenger, you will find you have a gazzillion of these files...

Cheers and good luck

Unralated, but did you by any chance install a new or update your firewall?
The firefly renderer may be blocked by your firewall.
See the Poser ReadMe for more details about the proper settings for your firewall.
