An interesting article and I recalled seeing this art form while stationed In Italy at the end of
WW II. I liked visiting museums and the digs at Pompeii and Florence in particular where I had a cameo carved from photographs of my then girlfriend (now my wife). A small boy sat next to the cameo artist learning the trade.

Nowadays, we have expensive cameras, expensive computers, ... while in the past, some had very expensive images ... made from, " ... an inlay of finely cut, highly polished slices of semiprecious stones: agate, lapis lazuli, jasper, carnelian, alabaster, rock crystal, amethyst" -- the Italian term for this artform is, "pietre dure".
