So there are tele-extenders, that increase the focal length of a lens. But is there a way to widen the image via an apparatus of the same nature?

If  "widen" = decrease the focal length then i think there are... only really seen them for camcorders tho. You are looking for something which says 0.45x or something below 1x as far as i am aware.  Cant help other than that as i havent really looked into it.

Gut reaction would be that the quality wouldnt be that great... but then all these extenders etc are compromises for buying the real deal.

I was thinking of taking my fish-eye lens (Canon 15mm) and trying to go even wider.

urm... doubt it...  what is the angle of view of the 15mm?  because you cant really go beyond 180 degrees without a specialist lens (or the nikon 8mm fish with a shaved collar can go to 185 degrees i am told).

However - you might get an interesting effect if you tried it.

Yeah, it already hits the 180 degree mark.
