Subject: Question concerning runtime folders

DigitalDreamer ( ) posted Fri, 15 August 2008 at 11:53 AM · edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 12:00 AM

I have always had runtime folders outside of Poser.

WIth Poser 7 SR3, 4 gig of RAM and a quad core processor, are external runtimes still necessary?

Thanks for your opinions

Yes. Poser has to search through runtimes to locate files... some people have over 200 GIG of content... do you really want poser to have to search through millions of files every time you want to load something? Not to mention backup headaches.

May I ask for clarification of something here, please? It's sort of on topic.

When looking for a referenced file, like a geometry or texture, does Poser look in its default Runtime first, then through each connected Runtime in turn until it finds one that matches?

And... does it only look in the specified folder (if it exists) before going on to look in the next library? If so, what is the meaning of the Preferences settings for search depth?

I never have really understood why Poser needs to search through the Runtimes for files whose paths are defined. I know they are relative paths, but within each Runtime, at least, they are fully defined, aren't they?

Thank you.

I think it looks in the current runtime first, then the root runtime, and then additiional ones.

If they are correct, Poser won't search. If search depth is set to none, Poser won't search for the file anywhere, shallow should look in the current runtime and full in all. (But the search mechanism isn't doing that in a rather poor way...)

Thanks for the explanation, Dizzi.
