Subject: Trying to create flat textures

Hey out there!
I have an interesting question for you guys.  I'm looking for a way to texture an object with a texture that does not wrap an object like you see in the picture below.

Instead I want to texture the object so that the texture appears to be facing the camera the entire time.  An example of this is shown below.

I've never heard anyone talking about doing this but I'm certain I'm not the first to try to do it and I have to assume that somewhere in the world of computer animation, someone has solved this problem.  I'd most want to use poser to do this since I'm most familiar with it but really, I'd be willing to use just about any 3d program out there which could accomplish this.

Thanks in advance you guys!  I've been stuck on this problem for quite a while.

As far as I know it is not possible to do what you are thinking unless the texture side of the model is facing the camera the entire time.

Can you 'Blue Screen" by rendering the object with say blue or green ambient color full on and then post-process your texture into it with an image editor like Photoshop?

Doing this would allow me to create images which look like drawings done in the manga style.  In manga, creators often use flat sheets of texture called screen tones which are layed over certain parts of the page.  I am trying to duplicate that effect.

how about creating a square prop, texture it with a the effect you want then create a transparency map to reveal only what you want.

Then parent the plane to a camera. Try also using point-at.

Or experiment with ockham's flatten script. Maybe that would do the trick.

If you have photoshop, the lasso tool can make wonders.

Here is a conventional scene render without lights and with the textures plugged into the ambient channel set to 1.0 --- you can add shading by putting an edge blender on the texture in the materials room.

You /might/ get the effect you want by plugging the texture into the ambient channel set to 1.0 with the diffuse channel set to 0.0 or by z-tooning it by parenting it to a prop which you set the z-scale to 5% or 10%. The details about z-tooning are here in the tutorial section. The situation is a little complex in that the flattened prop the figures and elements in your scene are parented to should be in turn parented to a control prop that you can manipulate in place of moving the camera. I have done nice toon work I think with ambient and z-tooning.
