Subject: Size of V4.2 in Poser?

Singular3D ( ) posted Sun, 12 October 2008 at 5:12 PM · edited Mon, 29 July 2024 at 7:22 AM

Hi, everybody,

This may have been discussed before, but I didn't find answers yet.

in DazStudio V4.2 is 1.791 meter tall. Sorry, I'm European Wink
Very tall lady.

If you import V4.2 to Carrara 6 Pro the size is 1,86m. So, what's the real size and what's the size in Poser 6/7 and Pro?

Any hints or links to useful discussions. Thanks!

In Poser 7, she's about 1.88 metres.

The problem is that there is no "real size".  The model isn't built relative to an absolute scale, so different programs will quite likely give her different measurements.

Singular3D ( ) posted Mon, 13 October 2008 at 12:15 PM

Wow, that's even taller. If you want to make props for V4.2, they should have the right size. It would be great, if there is a specification for Poser Native Units.

Thanks anyway...

Proportionally, she's over 2m tall.  Most particularly her legs are about 20-30cm longer than they ought to be ;)  Torso's a bit long imo also.  Poser people models evolve from people building on previous models, rather than looking at real world references.  You don't even look at Simon with his genitals conformed on, he looks like a humanoid frog.

I've always wondered why so many of the standard figs are so weirdly
proportioned.  Considering the amount of work that goes into developing
a figure, you'd think someone would have stopped and said:
"Wow, those thighs are WAY too long!"

A quick test on a chair would prove the point.

Correct information on human proportions has been available for
at least 500 years; it's hardly a state secret.

There is a theory that pops up from time to time that the various corporate figure builders have never seen an actual naked person... not an unreasonable conclusion to draw looking at the mesh.

Found a quite good information regarding Poser sizes. Thought I best share it with you.

Poser units have changed with some releases, I believe in poser 4. the poser unit was 100inch.
According to manual the official poser unit is 8.6 feet long or 2621.28 mm, mind this isn't 8 feet and 6 inches but 8.6 feet so 103.2 inches

(from the manual:ONE POSER NATIVE UNIT IS THE EQUIVALENT OF 8.6 FEET, OR 262.128 CENTIMETERS.)

Of course this makes completely sense using decimal notation in an imperial system, but since no one is paying attention to this I started to use the models itself as a standardsystem for making clothes and furniture.

He has a nice tutorial about poser units as well as some free scale props for meters as well inches.

Honestly I like the 1 poser unit equals to 8 inch more. So V4 is not a female giant.

Human beings have one basically common measurement. If you take two parallel lines, one at the top of a person's head, the other at the point of a person's chin, it's going to be about 9 inches (23 cm) no matter how large or small that person is. (standard adult, no precluding medical conditions)

I adjusted the size of various female Poser characters (no anime) so they all adhered to the 9 inch standard. here is the resulting list of their actual heights and the percentage I had to adjust them:

COMMON SCALE BODY ADJUSTED

CHARACTER                  BODY SCALING               OVERALL HEIGHT

I also went about it another way. Instead of adjusting their body sizes, I adjusted their head sizes. Due to the fact that most Poser figures have heads that are too small, the results using this method turned out to be more reasonable. :

This is one of my many attempts at trying to get a Poser character closer to normal proportions:

torso's still a little long though...

Keep in mind though, most Poser figures still have wonky proportions irrespective of the head - generally the legs are much too long.

Yes, I saw that in another thread that someone mentioned to set the leg length morph from V4 to 0.65 to get more realistic proportions.

momodot ( ) posted Wed, 15 October 2008 at 4:26 PM

My big discovery recently with the female figures is that scaling the thigh and shin down is better with the "scale" dial as opposed to the "y-scale" dial... this scaling combined with a negative value on stretch if that is available... the arms must be scaled as well and I sometimes y-scale the abdo. With Poser rescaling the head is a given IMHO.

Any ideas on the values?

Thighs and calves 95% or a little lower if you are brave. Then 95% x-scale on the shoulder.

Difficult to get clothing to work right when you do that.
