Subject: GMAX file conversion ?

Can anyone help convert a gmax model to md5 ?   I believe I can convert it from that in 3dsmax to an obj file .

thanks

gmax is no longer available.

Quote - gmax is no longer available.

 When did that happen? Nobody told me. :-) I seem to remember there was some convoluted way of converting Gmax's output to OBJ, possibly involving Milkshape, but even the Gmax support links I had are now dead.

GMax download at Turbosquid (Free)

Get this script: gMAX2OBJ.ms

  • Put the .ms script into your Gmax/scripts folder
  • Click the 'Utilities' button on the main control panel (looks like a hammer)
  • Click 'MAXScript' button in utilities rollout.
  • Click 'Run Script', navigate to gMAX2OBJ.ms and run it.
  • Click 'Open Listener' in the utilities rollout.
  • Copy the text window, save it as a .obj file.

It's convoluted because GMAX was specifically built to NOT export anything...
Works though...

ok, thanks
I did try turbosquid but the installer fails , so I assumed it was out of date .

I will try downloading it again .

It is a violation of the GMax license to convert to other formats.  GMax was a stripped down version of 3DMax and aimed at the game mod-ing community.  Plug-in modules where sold for many popular game engine platforms.

its a moot point anyway since gmax wont install on my system for some reason. I suppose I can try contacting the model maker and see if he can supply it in another format.  Thanks for the advice peoples.

Turbosquid is handling distribution but autodesk isnt supporting it at all anymore.

Gmax is supposed to be used as a modeling tool for the game file converter that is sometimes available for the game you are creating content for.  Some versions of Gmax could already export in Half-Life or Quake II format (but not import) without a file converter from the game maker.
