no, but i'll never forget what one print designer once said when someone asked him about tablet computers with screens that you can draw on. he said that being hunched over tables had caused generations of illustrators and designers to have serious back and neck problems, and that it was much better to have a situation where one could have the arm in a comfortable position while sitting up and looking at a screen.
that said, i know there Cintiq displays made to be upright (have been for years). those seem like they could work like easels.
Interesting as long as you are not over reaching across a desk to use one. Oh, now where did I put that extra $2000 dollars I was going to throw into the furnace to heat the room up with? Dear me I am such a scatter brain hehehehehehehe!
Actually my old Graphire died I had for a long time! Now I have this new Wacom bamboo and it's great!
I have an Intuous 3 6x8 and it's a glorified coffee coaster! It's used for everything but it's intended purpose. I've tried and tried to get over the disconnected feeling of looking straight ahead while I'm writing or drawing and it just doesn't work for me. The next tablet I get will be the kind in the link above.

Acadia,
Being a former illustrator who could never imagine using a computer to muscle in on my artwork I can offer you my findings of 25 years of using a tablet:
In 1983, it was a very strange disconnected feeling, as you described. Tablets and pens have gotten better over the years but it has never been the same experience of touching the surface directly with a pen/pencil.
That said, Cintiq isn't going to bridge that gap either. Pagenartist and cobaltdream have points too.
Reaching up to paint on the Cintiq screen is going to kill your shoulder, and it won't take long.
I still use an Intuos 6x8 daily and it serves all my CG drawing needs without crippling me.
If something really needed an old-school look there's no crime in getting out the traditional media and scanning it further down the line if needed.
If you get the Cintiq I hope you let us know how you like it/ or don't.
actually most people who use the cintiq, use it on the tabletop, tilted to about 30 degrees or so, about what you would generally tilt a drafting desk to draw on. I have tried them out at siggraph, and they are really nice, wonderful to work with. I have considered purchasing the cintiq 12 wx which is just under a thousand but ultimately decided that I wouldn't get enough use out of it to justify the cost so sticking with the trusty intuos 6x8.
I like my Intous3, gotten used to it. I tried a cintique a friend of mine has and it's nice but, not really worth all the extra money.
I had an Intuos 2 for about 3 yrs. I never got the hang of it. I bought a cintiq earlier this year. I lay it flat on the desk. It feels just like drawing directly on paper.

I have looked for the cintiq 21" but for some reason it isn't available in Europe and beside that the price is extremely high here. For the 21" inch I saw a price of €2400,- and the 12" is available for €1189,90 which is about $1546,47, $500 more than in the US.
Although I think it's a big advantage to draw on the screen and not on a separate tablet, it is way beyond my budget, and only within reach of a proffesional studio.
I have a graphire tablet and I like it, but it takes too much space on my desk.
best regards,
Bopper.
-How can you improve things when you don't make mistakes?
that "LITTLE" puppy gets quite warm... and screen calibration with the tablet part can be a pain in the pooper. i had to return my cintiq 2 times because the cursor would not stay exactly below the stylus all over the screen... so like..you calibrate it exactly again... have the cursor in the screen center below the stylus, but when you move the pen tip to the borders of the screen it keeps wandering away to the left or right of the pen tip.. the new ones i got from them had all the same issues. wacom is really neat on the tablet sector, this same issue might also appear on the regular tablets, only there it isnt that obvious because there is no screen on the drawing area. im also using a wacom penabled tablet pc, which also shows the same behaviour, its just a matter of 3-4 milimeters, but still, this makes it feel even more disconnected than using a normal tablet. after hours of trying to calibrate it you still get this "mouse cursor accuracy differs all over the tablet" issue. neat toy, but dont really worth the money, i prefer my intuos A3 plus.. only using the cintiq as display now

I saw that one in a store the other day and was wondering about it. The way it's packaged, it looked more like a kid's toy to me. On the other hand, it did say Wacom. I've been thinking about getting a tablet for some time now.
