Subject: PropsGuild Downloading no longer

Well it seems as though PropsGuild has been slammed by the mass downloaders. What's next?

Shadowcat, I think you will eventually see most of the free sites that carry their download library on their own server either require the files be placed on the author's own site, such as they do here on Renderosity, or you will see them close. They will have no choice. Greed and selfishness are two of mankind's greatest contributions to Creation. And our greed and selfishness comes not from instinct, but from a conscious decision. I think the raping of places like Poserworld and the Props Guild by the mass downloaders and the recent revelations of the prevalence of warez within the Poser community confirms that quite well. The people at Poserworld, the Props Guild, 3d Model World and others have asked and pleaded for people not to use programs that strip sites. Their pleas and requests were ignored. After all their requests, after all their pleas you are still going to have people say that the mass downloaders are not the problem, that they share no blame and that it is somehow, someway the site owners' fault. Go figure. Frankly, I wouldn't blame PoserWorld, the Props Guild and the others if they told us all to go to hell.

I'm afraid 3DModelworld is on the verge of closing their doors too. Their warnings get more ominous all the time. I'm afraid that the friendly little Poser Village that existed a year or two ago has become a major big city loaded with trash, gangs and criminals, and just like the real world, people will be forced to escape behind security gates and double-locked doors... Another small website that used to feature really nice free models has pulled everything off their website because they found the models were being resold elsewhere. Really too bad...

OK. I've listened to this complaint. And kept my mouth closed for a while now. I honestly thought someone would find it by now. I have been to web sites that don't let you use download managers. A method DOES exist. Because I've seen it. What happens is. You put the link into your Getright or Gozilla program. And when you turn it on to download the files. The link only opens an .html page. NOT the files. This DOES exist. And I can't believe nobody has found out how to do this by now. I'm not an expert on .html. And I don't know how this is done. But one of you folks has GOT to know how to do this. Russell Cook-- Our forum software person is really good at this kind of stuff. I hope he reads this and can shed some light on the subject. I know it can be done. ScottA

Yes I have also run into this on some sites when I have tried to use Gozilla or Getright (because of the download size and not wanting to spend 6hrs to download at once)it wont let me do it or the link just goes to a html page and that is all it will download. To get the file in question all I can do is download it normally and take my chances on lost connection

Why does this whole conversation remind me of that doctor suess book where this big machine goes and chops down all the puffy trees, leaving the world barren and lifeless. Dragontales

I think that the problem was not with poeple downloading the stuff, or even downloading everything, but by using the accelerators. These programs would take more bandwidth than normal downloading and also they left "spyders" leeching off bandwidth even after the downloading was done. I could be wrong, but I remember reading this when Poserworld went bye-bye. Scott: You say you don't know how stopping accelerators in HTML works, ya know what, neither do I, and just maybe neither do the people who run props guild.

casamerica ( ) posted Thu, 19 April 2001 at 1:40 PM

thats Odd I thought the PropsGuild downloads were free to all... <<< Game. >>>Funny how some people think they are not free to all who want to download them........ <<< Set. >>>As for MASSIVE downloads I agree submit a link not the items itself, The Bandwith gets overloaded if you don't. But I do not agree that restrictions for downloads are fair... <<< Match.

I am reading these complaints about gozilla and such, being a newbie to much of this discussion, I am in windows98 and of course as you all know, you have the option of save "target as" and save to disk..if using these options qualifies as something similiar to gozilla, perhaps it would be helpful to state that on the site IMHO.there are times I would like to save the zip file, in case of a crash(heaven forbid)but now it ddownloads in a temporary directory, and then unzips.Of course I can always zip it back up. But if using the above methods have caused a problem, I surely apologize. So many things to learn, so little "grey matter" to put it inScorpio

I love downloading free models as much as anyone, and I would hate to see it come to this- BUT IT WILL- I have been to a website that offers really great free 3D Models - BUT, they have a script that FORCES you to select ONE MODEL at a time, you are directed to a "Usage Read-Me", which you must then click "Accept" (that you have agreed to it), then are directed to the model to download. It is really slow and irritating, but it may be the ONLY way to slow people down AND make them read a legal usage statement. Sort of like Police cars parked by the road-side - notice how EVERYONE suddenly slows down? The one thing I really hate to see go however is not being allowed to download the preview pic. I find those highly helpful in cataloging download files (So I really know what they look like, reminding me why I wanted it) I always download the nice square previews at Renderosity- they are really great. Why are some website scripts preventing this? (like 3DModelworld)???...

It seems to me the problem with massive downloads is not JUST that others download but there is a lack of uploads. I think wites will be more forgivving if people would do more than take. Bsteph

Scorpio: right-clicking and choosing "save as" is not the same as using software accelerators, you are doing it right I think. As far as I can tell that way is the same as normal clicking. Thanks billywig for the info, glad to hear that propsguild will be back.

Moonbiter ( ) posted Thu, 19 April 2001 at 6:12 PM

Has anyone thought about just limiting the number of models you can download each day? I know of a 3d Sci-Fi site that you have to sign up with to get a password to download the models, your allowed two a day, and they some how generate a password to open the zipfile which is sent by email. I can't remember the site here at work but I could post the link later. BTW I don't that using a DL manager makes you greedy how many models you download does...

shadowcat ( ) posted Thu, 19 April 2001 at 10:43 PM

It really doesn't matter how or why downloading programs are bad, what matters is the owner's of the freebie sites have asked that they not be used because of rising costs. That alone should be a good enough reason for anyone, no matter how bad your connection is. (from an AOL user)

RonGC ( ) posted Tue, 24 April 2001 at 3:11 PM

Look at it this way. You have someone who is offering freedownloads to everyone. They request that you dont use Mass downloaders/acellerators to download, because they are causing them problems, headaches, grief etc. They have not said you can't download just please do it the old way, click the link. Out of respect and consideration for them you should do as they ask, quit with the mass downloader/accellerators. After all its their site and their money to run that site and their right to stop offering free stuff if you cant' be a little compliant with their needs as well as your own. So to all you who use these mass weapons of destruction, layoff will you and you will earn our gratitude and respect. RonGC
