Subject: Poser 5 to Poser 6

Greetings All,

I am considering a purchase of P6. I currently own P5.  I would like some input as to the differences between the two programs, and what would be the advantages to the upgrade. CP has P6 for $30.00. The money is not the issue. Also, does V4,A4 and M come with P6. Also I understand that you can add external run-times, which should cover making all the content that I've collected, but how does that work? for example , for each catogory {character, props and materials} will I create a new run-time in each?

Thank you in advance for taking the time to help me.
Happy New Year and for those of you who drink, please drink responsibly.

Please spay and neuter your pets. Strongly consider shelter adoption before spending $500 to $1000. If you MUST part with that kind of money for a pet, go to your local shelter, donate the money to them and pickup a highly adoptable pet. The shelters could sure use the donation.

P6 for the most part is a bug fix for P5, they added a few new features but IMO for the regular upgrade price wasn't worth it, but for $30 bucks why not.

No the millennium figures do not come with P6 or any version of Poser those are DAZ figures.

External runtimes work just the same in P6 as with P5. and you should have no problem just pointing P6 to your P5 runtimes.

Hi Viper,

Poser 6 is DEFINITELY worth it ... it just maybe the deal of the century. 😄

You can see some of the neat things you'll find in Poser 6 in this tutorial. 👍

Poser 6 and later really come into their own when you have a dual monitor setup. I run Poser 6, 7 and Poser Pro on a dual monitor machine, one monitor dedicated to the document window, one monitor dedicated to the library, editor windows and palettes.
Raytraced lights now can have soft shadows, a major omission in Poser 5
Poser 6 and later have "official" support for MAT poses - they're called Material Collections, and you can create those within Poser itself.

Don't buy Poser 6 for the new figures - James (human male) is pretty OK, but Jessi (human female) has some major flaws - forearms far too long, upper arms far too short, ridiculously large hands and feet. Poser 5 Judy may not be a beauty queen, but at least she's got some realistic proportions.
The basic environment figures and props are pretty good (after all, it's RDNA MicroCosm), but they come with very few morph and material options. If you want some real use out of the environment stuff, you're better off buying the complete thing at RDNA - oodles of morphs, plus an immense variety of textures and materials.

Python support within P6 is also improved. You can find quite a lot of P6 or higher Python scripts here in freestuff. Some of them can do really complicated stuff (shameless plug, but I am still quite proud of my SpawnCharacter Python script. A script that fully automates INJ/REM pose file generation from a custom morphed character).

$30 is a bargain.

go to poser 7 instead.  in OS X it's the only way to do python scripts AFAIK,
but if enuff people buy P7/PPro, it also makes more cash available to SM
if they're gonna produce a superior version of P8 IMVHO.

Poser 5 Python scripts with a user interface don't run on Mac OSX, because either Tkinter or Tk/Tcl is broken on OSX (no Poser fault).
Poser 6 Python scripts with a Poser 6 dialog style (wxPython graphics lib) should run as is on OSX.
Poser 7 adds a few things to Poser 6 that are definitely worthwhile. The render engine can use up to 4 GB of (virtual) memory, as opposted to the 2 GB of Poser 6 and earlier, and multithreaded rendering speeds things up a bit (or a lot, depending on the scene and the hardware)l. The Python script menu is a nice addition, so is IBL based lighting.

I'm not sure if the upgrade from Poser 5 to Poser 7 is worth it for the original poster (It was for me, but that's water under the bridge). A lot depends on what kind of scenes you want to do.

The $30 upgrade to Poser 6 is great value for money, for any Poser 5 user. The upgrade to Poser 7 will not be as cheap, and might not be as good a deal. Again, that depends on hardware and (intended) Poser usage.
