Interesting video on the importance of good topology in subdivision surface creation, the need to maintain quads and how to remove non-quad faces.

The explanations and examples in the video are plain-as-day simple so anyone can follow along.  Thought I'd share.

That's a good one, very clear and fairly thorough.  A whole lot of detailed discussion on topology with many illustrations can be found here:

Guerrillacg tuts are fantastic, I saw them some time ago. They are short but extremely clear and go straight to the prob.. On subDmodeling site are very large discussions regarding topology, allot of great info :)

No offense, but I wasn't that impressed by that. Seemed to me like someone who either doesn't have a very good understanding of things or is bad at explaining. Maybe it gets better, but I lost patience after the first few posts.

That video on the other hand is amazing. And subdivisionmodeling is definitely good for these things, as well.

He just needs to explain now how to use such knowledge when modeling a human head instead of the top of a mailbox.  The cartoon gorilla used hair to hide his "artifacts".  But artifacts don't matter all that much for topology or animation when it comes to cartooning.  He should be using a realistically modeled gorilla to show off his modeling rules.

And lose the bongos.

The "top of the mailbox" is just there to show how Catmull-Clark smoothing handles the subdivs when vertices occur on a surface transition and also inline edges work (but I call them "control edges" because that's what they do). Nothing more special than that. And for demonstrating that point, it works perfectly without any confusion.

As for the tutorial itself, I think the presentation is very nice. Anytime there's a "dumb newb" question, I think that particular vid seems like it would be worth linking to. Greg seems to know his stuff, and does fairly good presentation. I just wish he'd speak up a bit louder. Some people either have crap hearing or crap laptop computer speakers, and in either case it's a bit hard to make out the dialog. (Optional subtitles might not be a bad idea.)
