Subject: Detailing a 30-something

Believable3D ( ) posted Sun, 08 March 2009 at 3:55 AM · edited Sun, 17 November 2024 at 6:39 AM

Okay, here's the character I've been working on. Right now, I'm mostly interested in matters related to specularity and bump; the profile render indicates to me that I need to do more detailed texturing of the ears (or is that just a lighting issue?), although if anyone else has any further ideas regarding the ears.. say away.

Given the fact that I'm aiming for a woman mid-to-late-30s, does this bump detail look reasonable? I've used a few different angles and light settings to give something of a flavour. (Click for full size.)

Commenting as a non-expert... (at least in terms of modelling and texturing... I do have some experience in the woman-in-her-thirties department.)

To me this character is totally believable, and certainly gives the impression of a slightly older woman... perhaps not quite late thirties, though. The modelling around the mouth is very good, I think, as is the slight discolouration under the eyes.

Of course it depends so much on the lighting - some of your images just don't really show the hints of age so much. If anything, I would add a delicate touch to the lines under the outside edges of the eyes, and perhaps very faint crows feet. It almost looks like she never laughed at all!

Hope this is some help.

Oh, I should add something else...  my first impression was of a very smooth 'porcelain' skin texture, but I noticed it only subconsciously. I think her skin could do with more noticeable bump, especially pores around the nose and cheeks.

Thanks for those comments, IsaoShi. I've been going round and round on the bump, because under some lights it's been really heavy, and under others, barely noticeable. Maybe I've backed it off too much, because I don't like how it looks when it's "obvious." (I actually do have some lines going on in the bump at the edge of the eyes and underneath.)

Will boost it a bit and see what happens.

I like this! My only point of critique is the thing you've done under her chin, it looks a little odd. I assume you're aiming for jowls and they should be here, too. But the indents look wrong. They aren't noticable ion all the renders but in a few they're very prominent and looks off :) Especially on this one:

Thanks, TrekkieGrrl. Yeah, I didn't notice that until I exported out of my 3D app. I think if the line went all the way across it would be fine...

It's alright; I don't think it will be hard for me to fix. But I've been focusing on texturing and bumping at the moment rather than the morph (I plan on doing a couple body sculpts).

Okay, I think I'm getting pretty close with these wrinkles/laugh lines/etc:

The lowest one is super! I love the faint lines on her cheeks there. Very believable. She does look late thirties/early forties now :) looks in a mirror.. yup.. about that age..

One thing though (of course depending on the starting point): the lips tend to get smaller with age, and it starts around there (judging from myself), so unless she's got a little bit of botox.. her lips should be just a smidgeon smaller I think. This is how mine USED to look LOL

Thanks, TrekkieGrrrl. Glad to know it's looking mostly right.

I see what you're saying about the lips. In truth, when I was sculpting, they didn't look that large... things look so different with skin and other details added.

So, I may sculpt them smaller. Or maybe I'll change the lip size with the augmented head....

What I plan on doing is providing a completely sculpted head (no Morphs++) and two sculpted bodies, then adding a second version of the head augmented with Morphs++, as well as a Morphs++ body (for better ease of clothing for those not comfortable with magnets and who don't own an app that can add morphs to clothes).

Anyway, to make a long story short, the Morphs++-augmented head will have some additional detailing, such as smaller eyes... I think they're just a bit too large, and that's one thing I find difficult to sculpt in a 3D app without wrecking the geometry. So while I'm at it, I'll do a few other tweaks with Morphs++, so maybe that's how I'll handle the lips. I'll see how it goes....

I think the bump is good for now... I'll probably revisit again for final tweaking after I finish the colour maps and the sculpts and morphs. I just thought I'd post the extreme closeup I did this a.m.

Thanks for your comments, everyone!
