Another reason to use a remote trigger is to lessen camera shake - when you physically PRESS the shutter, you also slightly press the camera body and produce motion. If on a tripod it's as minimal is possible.

As far as the lighting, early morning and later afternoon provides that kind of lighting - rich warm side lighting and deep shadows. If someone/something is in the shade in the foreground they will be a nice black silhouette.

(one of the reason I used to LOVE AGFA slow films for sunrise/sunset is because it reacted VERY red to the sunlight and VERY blue to the shade giving an almost fake overdone look to everything - great stuff, but no more since I've gona digital...)
