Subject: Smartpropping a character?

Hello,

is it possible to smartprop a figure (e.g. a flail that itself is a figure) to V4? want the flail loaded in the hand, not the ground :D

my solutions so far:
a) Model an artificial forearmbone (works but is not the best way i think) and conform it later
b) load V4 move the Flail in place, make V4 invisible and parent the Flail to her. save, load and conform the dummy v4 to the "real v4"

are there better ways? and if not, is there a dummyv4 anywhere that doesnt eat as much resources as a real v4?

thanks for the help.

You can't do it inside Poser, but you can edit the parent of the flail's BODY
to a part of Vicky.

Find this part in the flail's CR2:

actor BODY:1
    {
    name    BODY
    off
    bend 1
    dynamicsLock        1
    hidden      0
    addToMenu   1
    castsShadow     1
    includeInDepthCue       1
    useZBuffer      1
    parent UNIVERSE

and change the last line to

   smartparent lHand

This will work, but probably isn't a good idea for a product for sale,
because Poser may do strange things when you delete the main figure.

thanks for the quick response,
i tried it and it worked... buuuut

i edited it, moved it, saved it and boom on loading. the flail dissembled - partially loaded in hand, partially in default position. on second try my poser crashed.

any other ideas? already tried your snap to python, but it just works once on the flail.if i decide to reuse it it goes off screen. strange :/

Is the flail something you have made or something you bought? If it's something you made, do you plan to distribute it? Or is it just for your own use? Do you plan to use it with a particular figure, or must it work with any figure? If a particular figure, which one?

I'm trying to get a clearer idea of exactly what you need.

The procedure described by ockham should work. Here is how I would do it.

First you should check that the centre of rotation of the flail's BODY and handle are in the correct place so that the flail will rotate correctly in the hand if needed, then Memorize the flail.

Turn off IK and zero your character, zero the flail. move the Body actor of the flail until it is in the correct position  relative to the hand (don't parent it). Again Memorize the flail. Save the flail to a Figure pallet. Open the resulting cr2  in a text editor. Find the parent line in the flail's BODY and replace it with "smartparent rHand" (or lHand). Resave the file, it should work. If you need to delete either figure, unparent the flail first, otherwise Poser may crash.

A more elegant solution would be to turn the flail into a conformer, but that's a bit more complicated.

Hmm... thanks for the step by step tutorial, i believe now i know what i want.
first i am just fooling around to get into the rigging stuff. i use the flail for learning purpose, i tried to rig it and it worked. now the problem i have is i Want to make it a conformer.
i can do that by addding a forearmbone to it and a "connectjoint", voila conformed.

there will occur a lot of questions if i cannot solve it myself ...
what i REALLY want is: i rigged it lying on the floor. i want it´s setup in the setuproom appear as it is in the poseroom (e.g. not bent or something, just the whole zeroed bones and polys moved by an offset so i can easier add v4 conformerbones)... is that possible?

I found a way.... make a new prop and make a conforming figure outofit (prop =1px cube),
=>figC
pose the flail =>figf
drag in setupmode from figc figf into the handbone from figc.
save as Group and have fun....
but it looks bloody messy with two figures. for other things i want to stick with the miniprop method (could be usefull to be able to integrate two fullyrigged figures, but is there a way to clean the mess up and make just one figure out of it? ;)
