Subject: Geometries and Textures folders to external drive?

Is there a way to have the geometries and textures folders on an external drive like my library folders and have Poser find them automatically? These folders are getting rather huge and I'm afraid my wimpy work computer is running out of space.

i install only bases and morphs to the defualt runtime and have everything else setup in external runtimes on an external harddrive - works great for me

Yep, you can without a problem.  As long as associated files are kept within the same runtime folder.

I'm with BrandyE on this one.  The only things I install to my Poser 7 runtime are the DAZ base files and the morphs.  Everything else goes into runtimes on my external drive.

A really easy way to become more flexibility is this:

Download and install Coreutils from http://www.gnu.org/software/coreutils/

One of the new commands you have now is Unix like filesystem-linking.

How to:

  1. Move your Poser texture folder to another disk (to d:xposertextures for example).
  2. Open a DOS window, change to the directory your poser texture folder should be (isn't there anymore because you moved it).
  3. Type in the command to link to the position of the new path.

BrandyE and Victoria_Lee, my ignorance, let me show it to you. What exactly are the base files? They are not in the Geometries folder?

adp001, thanks, I'll have my  network admin do that for me. (IT doesn't let us do anything with our machines.)

The base files are the new Gen4 DAZ Characters and their morphs (V4-A4-M4, etc.).  Any add-ons, like character/texture sets purchased here or somewhere else are loaded into external runtimes which live out on my external HDD.

The new Geometries have to be in the Poser 7 default because of the way they've coded all of the deltas.  The older characters (Victoria 3 and the like) are all out on the external hdd because they don't need to be in the base folder.

Thanks. Do the base files live in a special folder? I don't use the gen4 figures except for v4 so I can use winnston1984's Fembot (which I really don't see a use for at work), so i guess that's basically not an issue for me anyway. I moved the Geometry files and the textures files to an external drive and there doesn't seem to be a problem finding the geometries, but I still get asked to find the texture files. I guess I'll have to do that re-mapping thing.

You can move the Geometries and the texture files out to an external with no problems.  The only thing that ABSOLUTELY MUST live in the native P7 folder are the delta files but I just leave the entire base set in the P7 runtime.

As for finding the texture files, just make sure your search is set to Deep and it shouldn't be a problem unless you're trying to load a .pz3 that you created prior to moving the folders.  If that's the case, just go into the material room, plug the textures back in from the new location (I know it's time consuming) and then resave your .pz3 and everything will load correctly the next time you load the .pz3.

If that's not the case then it's because the .cr2 file is looking for the textures in the original folder.  You can change that by opening the .cr2 in a text editor and doing a search/replace for the original location and replacing it with the new location.  The .cr2 is editable in a good text editor (I use EditPad Pro because I can do search/replace in batch mode).

Victoria_Lee, you've been very helpful. One of the problems with looking for texture files is that more often than not, they live in folders that have names that are totally unrelated to the cr2. If an object is named Medusa and the tex file is also named Medusa, no problem. But a lot of the time I'll have an object named "BarberPole" and the tex file is named "abc3d". Good luck finding that.
I never thought about editing the cr2 files. Thanks a lot.

Hogsoft's CRPro  or  Poser File Organiser by Ralf Sesseler (D3D) helps with this reorganization of Poser content.  By using full paths to your textures and geometeries these files can live anywhere.  If you have a large runtime either of these progams will save you hours.
