Subject: running Poser Pro w/64 bit computer.....anyone w/ similar expereinces? pls help!

Hi,

so I thought if I was to upgrade my 32 bit PC to a 64 bit (w/ faster CPU), my Poser Pro program would run a bit smoother...... but boy was I in for a shock!!

when I opened one of my old poser files that I had created w/ my previous pc (32 bit w/4 GB RAM), I found that I could not easily move the character (in one fluid motion w/ a mouse)... The file size is only 160 MB... perhpas there is a setting within Poser that I need to turn on?
FYI, I usually work w/ full tracking turned on...w/ Preview Drawing using OpenGL Hardware...
I have tied using fast racking and SreeD software w/o much improvement....

In a nutshell, is there a hardware and/or software setting that would allow faster movement of individual chacacters w/ mouse (under preview window)? Your input/advise would be greatly appreciated.... :c)

BTW, here is my PC spec:

OS: Windows vista ultimate (64 bit)
processor : Core (TM) I7 CPU  940 @ 2.93 GHz, 4 Core(s), 8 logical processor
Graphic card : ATI HD 4800 (1 GB RAM)

total physical memory: 24 GB
available physical memory : 20 GB (w/poser opened)
total virtual memory : 47.5 GB
available virtual memory : 44 GB (w/poser opened)
page fiel space: 24.3 GB

Thanks again for your help/advise

Cheers

I have the same issue, well relatively.

Machine:
Dual core 2.66;  8gig  memory;  64-bit Vista Ultimate; Two 500gig drives with Poser Pro on C: drive and the swap file on E: drive. I've shut down most of the extraneous junk running in the background of Vista. (If you haven't done this, I highly recommend doing it. There are a lot of unnecessary services running by default in Vista.)

Poser Pro has been setup to use 4 threads in separate processes. I've played with the rendering settings as well, but to no avail. I have noticed though that Poser Pro does not seem to manage memory very well, it seems to load up the processor thus bringing the system to it's knees. Sadly, most of my renders and animations are single characters with nothing dynamic. I too experience slowness in moving objects and rendering. If I change cameras, it takes about 5-10 seconds before Poser responds. The 64-bit rendering is nice, when it works, but it too does not manage memory well.

Any ideas? Is there a way to get Poser Pro to better utilize memory?  I'm about ready to go back to Poser 6 or 7. I'm slowly learning Carrara hoping that will work in place of doing some animation in Poser. And for what it's worth, the Collada is not as good as originally promised. But that is for another thread.

Sorry vxg139, I wish I had some good advice instad of being in the same boat. My files are generally 5-60MB, so I doubt it would be a file size issue.

thanks,

-p

sounds like we need 64 bit verison of Poser Pro.... I have vested to much time and money into Poser to switch.... but then again, I have learnt "Nevr Say Never"!!

Thanks again for your response...

have you tried the ATI drivers fix?

edit the poser.ini file located in C:Documents and SettingsApplication DataPoser 7poser.ini and change

PREVIEW_OGL_OBJECT_BBOXPICKING 0

to

PREVIEW_OGL_OBJECT_BBOXPICKING 1

it works for Pro as well.

also Poser Pro is 64bit in the render engine only.

Hmmm,
I have a IntelQuad 2.6 ghz, GeForece 9800 card, 8 gigs ram, Windows XP Pro x64 bit os and PoserPro and can do anything I want with no limitations.
I suggest you update your versions of Poser and/or your video cards.

Anyone running any of the more recent versions of Windows should go to here & have a good long read about the various services that Windows has running by default & see how many are unnecessary to you.

Khai, where can I find "poser.ini" The path that you have listed is not available on my pc. I can't even find the file name w/search engine....

Also, thanks for link on windows servies undr 64 bit OS.... will certainly check it out....

BTW, I have updated my poser pro w/ latest patches from SmithCo....As of now, I am at a total loss as to what is causing Poser' preview screen to have such a slow response... it is like pulling teeth!!

Under Vista, you'll find the file at:

C:UsersAppDataRoamingPoser Pro

I wonder if Vista is part of the problem. I used to run XP-64 with Poser 7, but due to driver problems with the new hardware, I had to switch to Vista-64 and went ahead and upgraded to Poser Pro at the same time. I've gone through the trouble of disabling all of the unnecessary Vista services:
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/81176-speed-up-performance-vista.html

Time to try OS-7 huh? I've heard it runs much better than Vista.

My video card is an nVidia GTS 8800. An ATI video driver might help solve the problem with an ATI card, but I find it curious that I'd have the same issue with an nVidia card. So, chances are this is more than a video card issue.

And for what it's worth, the 64-bit machine running Poser only has Poser, Adobe PhotoShop and Carrara. It is only for doing art. No MS Office, or other non-essential programs.

Everyone's comtribution is wonderful, I'm just trying to help narrow the field of possibilities.

Turning off Enable Hardware shading in the render settings for the preview might improve the speed in preview mode as well.

Wimvdb;

You may have solved part of the problem. VXG139, try this:

Check your settings under Render/ Render Settings tab/ Preview tab:

When I had Enable hardware shading checked and OpenGL selected, my preview window was terribly slow. I changed the settings to Sreed and unchecked Enable hardware settings. It's not as pretty in Preview, but my character is easy to move around and I have better control of the cameras now. Odd that I never ran into this with Poser 7.

As suggested in another thread I was reading last night, part of the problem may be related to the OpenGL drivers. The driver that comes with certain video cards may not be completely compatible with Poser Pro.

Thanks guys for the your wonderful advice and insights....

I did played around with the Preview tab option and I got the best response by selecting "Enable Hardware Shading".... go figure!!!

going this way, preview screen is extremely fluid and pleasant.... However, I am still struggling with moving individual characters... it takes 5 to 10 secs. to select the character and takes even longer to move w/ cursor!!

When I brought up tje CPU, originallyCPU usage were almost non-existant... but when I tried to select a character, here is what I observed... the First CPU bing overloaded!!

I am thinking that with Poser Pro being a 32 bit program, it can only access the first CPU and hence the overload on one CPU...and hence the reaosn for slow response???? any thoughts?

Thanks again for your valuable insights...

Cheers

do the edit I suggested. you are describing the exact problem with ATI cards that the fix is for. the edit was suggested by the EF/SM support guys.. and it works. (I had to do it to my Poser 7 and Poser Pro)

Khai,

I don't seem t ofind the file directory as suggested by ghonma either....
....

C:UsersAppDataRoamingPoser Pro

This is the file listing under my user name....

Is the file name Poser.ini?

Khai ( ) posted Mon, 11 May 2009 at 12:36 AM

yup it is, and you've got system folders hidden that's why you can't see it.
follow this link's instructions and you'll see the required folders
