Subject: Help exporting from Poser to Bryce?

dyret ( ) posted Thu, 04 June 2009 at 10:26 PM · edited Sat, 01 February 2025 at 6:05 PM

I have created a number of caracters in Poser 7 with the help of a friend of mine. The trouble I come across is that I don't own Poser myself and when I try to import these caracters in DAZ Studio they loose their morphs I injected in Poser. I have bought all the figures and their morphs wich we have used in Poser to make the characters. So... Could anyone point me towards a tutorial on how to export from Poser to Bryce? I don't understand what to check in the export dialouge in Poser and the characters simply disappears.

hmm...well, i haven't done it in quite some time, but here's some things to check out.

What you can import into Bryce is objects. If you have dynamic clothes, I think those don't come over (unless there's a way I don't know about). Also, the exteriors of the eyes used to come over as translucent (from Poser, anyway. From Daz Studio, I don't think it's a problem). You had to apply the most transparent glass mat to get them to work right.

that's a start. Most of the Poser to Bryce tutorials were written years ago. You might ask in the Daz Studio forum, they'd be the most likely to have the answers...

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

Dyret,

I have this problem quite often when I am using complicated morphs or poses that exceed the default limits of movement.  You can re-pose or re-apply the morphs in DAZ Studio if you have the content in that format, but what I prefer to do is this:

  1. export the finished character from Poser as an obj, which will create a mesh shaped and posed in exactly the same way as the character.  (See how to do this below)

  2. Save the Poser file with your character, then import it (the .pz3) into DAZ Studio, ignoring  any loss of morphs or changes to the pose, then export it and import it into Bryce as you are already doing. This will bring all the required texture maps and settings into the Bryce file

  3. keep the Bryce file open, and import the obj that you exported in step 1 (make sure that the mtl file that was created by Poser along with the obj is in the same folder as the obj). The obj will pick up the textures that are already in the Bryce file

  4. delete the character that was imported from DAZ Studio from the Bryce file, and you will be left with a correctly-shaped character with as good texturing as you would have got on the DAZ  Studio import. (You will probably have to do a little tweaking of the settings to get the textures exactly as you want them for Bryce, but you would have had to do that anyway.)

It is a slightly longer process, but you do end up with the exact character and pose that you worked hard to perfect in Poser.

Exporting an obj from Poser:

  1. go to the export menu and select "Wavefront obj"
2 in the next box make sure that export range is set to "Single Frame" and click on OK
  2. in the hierarchy selection box untick "ground" if you have it in the list, but leave everything else as it is and click on OK
  3. in the next box choose the location and name for your obj file and click on Save
  4. in the final box tick "include body part names in polygon group" and un-tick "weld body parts at seams" and click on OK.

The settings I've recommended for the final export box will leave you with more parts to your mesh than you would have got from DAZ Studio, but I find that this is an advantage when adjusting the textures (or adding your own in Bryce)

I hope that this helps
