Subject: Restoration Challenge (for fun)

TwoPynts ( ) posted Fri, 12 June 2009 at 2:47 PM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 8:30 AM

Have nothing planned this weekend?
What to see how far your Photoshop skills have progressed?
Why not try you hand and restoring this photo:

Don's Army Photo

It is a photo of the 70+ year old owner of my company when he was in the Army.
He gave it to me to see what I could do with it and I figured, "Why not see what the talent of Renderosity can do with this?"

The full size 7MB scan can be downloading by right-clicking HERE and choosing the 'download attached file' option, or whatever your browser says.  Or just clicking on it will open it in the browser and once it fully loads you should be able to save to your HD after that.

You can send your finished restorations to kkramer at pdi-eft.com%0A~Kort) ...and post a smaller version her for others to see.  For your efforts you will receive a pat on the back, a hearty "Atta Boy!" and an all expense paid vacation to wherever you current reside.  Seriously, I can't offer you anything, but I do promise to show the boss any restorations that are done.

If no one expresses an interest in this by next week, I'll un-sticky the thread and it can quietly sink into oblivion, no harm done.  But I'm willing to be at least one or two of you are up for the challenge. :m_bouncy:

Cool I will have a go at this

Thanks David!  Atta boy!
Let me know if you have any problems downloading the file.
It is saved as a max quality JPEG. I suggest saving it as a non-destructive file type while working on it.

Kort I have just down loaded the image with no problems.  Give me a few hours I should be able to get something back to you.

Hahah, a few hours? No rush...I won't be able to check my work email until Monday anyway, and won't be on much over the weekend.  But I look forward to seeing what you do! The original is about 4x6 and I've already tweaked the scan a bit, but didn't do any clean up or try to rebuild the missing parts.

I gave it about 45 minutes, all the time I could spare. Thank Don for his service.

I leave it whole to you, in case you want to make any alterations. Cap, Head, Shirt and Tie are all on seperate layers -the color changes are saved as seperate and nondestructive and you can make changes in skin tone/ glossiness and color of the clothes..

Cheers!

I send you the link to the Photoshop file! (40MB)

This is my second version. This is the first time I do something like this so it's a great exercise for me.

When I try to send you the image the system send me a deliver failured because of the image size. So if you are interested in the image let me know.

WOW!!   I must say I am impressed. I always get high seeing what other can do. :-) Here is my humble attempt.

Some great work here! I recently did a restoration for someone, but the photo wasn't anywhere near as torn up as this one. Looks like I will have to give it a try too, just to hone my skills a little more. Would love to hear what program you guys are using and which tools. I have CS2, so I'm still learning all the ins and outs.

I used my good old PSP9 :)
Clone brush
smudge
Lighten/darken-brush
copy and paste of the hat missing on the other side. I tried to keep as much of the original as possible. Also the background.
Oh yes and feathered selections for removing edges of the paste layers.
At last i used colorize to give it the tone i wanted.
Thats about it.

I haven't done much photo retouching, but liked the challenge so here's my attempt. There are some really great images already posted here!

Wow, what a turnout! I didn't expect such a great turnout. On the run right now but will be back to comment later. Super work everyone, better than I would have been able to do, that's for sure. :)

Again, thanks for all the hard work and excellent results everyone. I'm still running CS1 but hope to get CS4 by year's end. LukeA, ,vintorix, helanker and spedler -- thank you, thank you, thank you! lyron, 2 versions, you really went above and beyond. They are all great. If anyone else still wants to play, I'd love to see what you can do (David, Kim). :)

Here is my restoration of Don Army:

TwoPynts ( ) posted Tue, 16 June 2009 at 9:53 AM

Very nice job Dan. I see you took the cropping rout at the bottom, that was what I was going to do to. I'm quite impressed with those that were able to recreate the totally destroyed sections. Javier (lyron) has posted the restoration to his web site. Everyone that has participated feel free to do the same if you wish.

Could use more tinkering, but this is what I came up with after and hour and a half. Not terribly happy with my first pass at the painted parts (lower portions that were gone) but for now this is a good stopping point. -Lew

Looks pretty good to me Lew, thanks for 'playing'. I'm going to unsticky the thread, but if anyone else wants to join in, feel free!

Well sorry Kort, but I spent about an hour on it one day, but I just don't have the time to work on it right now.
Thanks for the opportunity to practice though, it really helps! I hope more people can post restorative photos to practice on, cuz I'm always looking to challenge myself in that area! :)

No worries Kim. If and when I get more, I'll create another challenge. :) If anyone has some old photos they'd like to submit for restoration, let me know via sitemail and I'll set it up.

Well it certainly wasn't something for me, I almost had to ask somebody to use violence to stop me from going on- to give him a total make-over...

;)

Quote - I guess this is over ??

Feel free to do one if you like...it was just a personal challenge to see how well you could restore it. BTW everyone, my boss loved the restorations. I put them on a CD for him so he could look at them whenever he wanted. He asked me to tell you he, "Really appreciates everyone's efforts. I had no idea that photo could look so new again. It brings back good memories of my youthful Army days, thanks."
