Subject: Saving Props with external binary off --Question

DarksealStudios ( ) posted Sun, 02 August 2009 at 2:45 AM · edited Wed, 23 October 2024 at 6:47 AM

Hi, maybe this is a dumb question... When I save a prop to the library with external binary morphs unchecked, do I no longer need the original geometry in the geometry folder?? I'm using poser 6 and I made a bunch of props today. I noticed my .pp2 files were larger than expected. I opened it up and I see a bunch of info and no refrence to the obj.

I dont want to make my zip file huge and was wondering, is the geometry information being stored in the pp2? Do I need to package the obj files still?

Usually the object data are included in the pp2 so no other geometrie information is needed. The usage of external binary morph data does not effect this. If you use figures with included morphs then the cr2 or pz3 is stored withotz this information and the morph data is in the corresponding pmd file.

If you're planning on distributing the prop you've made, then it would be a good idea to learn how to externalise the geometry, i.e. refer to an external OBJ rather than that data being embedded in the PP2.

--- Is there a setting in poser that keeps the external refrence to the geometry while it makes the pp2 file?
--- Or do I have to do it manually in txt?

--- Is there some kind of draw back to having the data embeded in the pp2 file?
--- Why make the extra steps to refrence?

--- Would I do the same structure as in a cr2 file by adding geomCustom 13 string? Do you have a link were I could learn to externalize the geo from a prop?

Any help would be great!

It makes it easier to update the OBJ.
The main reason though is that it allows Poser to reuse the geometry for multiple copies of the prop in the scene.

You have to do it manually

No particular drawback, but as I said originally, external geometry is preferred (some store insist on it being used for props etc.)

This is straight forward, cut and paste the geometry into a new file, then change the extension to OBJ.
You then need to refer to that file in the PP2.

There is a Windows utility that will do this.

Thanks Chris for the geometry stripper. Works like a charm. So simple even I can do it!
Tested it, made sure the itgem worked and tossed the backup file it made, packaged it, and now i'm gonna go upload!
