Subject: Poser 8 Material Library Issue

rsg ( ) posted Wed, 12 August 2009 at 2:34 PM · edited Sun, 05 January 2025 at 11:59 PM

Been playing with P8 since last Thursday. It's been behaving itself(only crashed twice). I like the ability to apply materials to my scene without going into the material room - if it worked. Every time I attempt to apply a material in the 'Pose' room nothing happens, it acts like it's loading but nothing happens when it's done. If I switch to the material room, my material hasn't been loaded. If I apply my material inside the material room it works like it's supposed to.
Has anyone else encountered this issue? It's not a problem really but I know it's not supposed to be doing this, I just don't want to be the only one whose noticed/experienced it.

I have not tried this but I am having trouble with a few materials (alysons bra for 1) I'll have to make sure if I'm in the mat room or not... thing is, 2 work and 1 doesn't....

I noticed the same thing, so you're not alone :) It is a bit annoying having to go into a different room, apply the material pose, then walk back.

Good to know I'm not the only one. Like I said, it's not a huge issue - I'm used to having to switch rooms. It would be nice if it worked properly, just have to hope it's fixed in SR1.

You are not the only one. We were also t old we could "Drag and Drop" materials and from my experience, that has not worked yet either in or out side of the material room.

Material pose? Or material? Or material collection?

A single material file (mt5) cannot be applied by double clicking.  You must drag the material and drop it on a prop or figure in the preview window, so Poser knows which material group to load it into.

A material collection or a mat pose file is supposed to apply to the selected figure by double clicking, or apply to any figure or prop by drag and drop.

The drag and drop sometimes must be done sort of deliberately, not a casual swipe. Sometimes it seems to not register the first time. A second attempt usually works.

I'm specifically talking about material collections, specifically V4 textures(these are complete characters, not partials). I got into the habit of taking these characters with a lot of options, setting them the way I want and saving that as a material collection.

I haven't even tried the drag and drop option, it honestly just doesn't interest me.

ETA: I just want to thank you, bagginsbill for not only your work on the library but VSS and all the info you've supplied on these forums(and the Node Cult), it's been very informative(and some of it I actually understand. lol).

I don't know Bill, how does Poser know which material zone to apply a dragged and dropped MT5 file to by dropping it in the preview window? I was trying to drag them to the node in the material room so it would apply to the right zone and it just wouldn't drop.

It looks at what polygon is under the mouse pointer when you let go. That polygon is associated with a material zone. That's the one it goes into.

So if you have a figure with shirt and pants conforming clothing, there are three figures, and possibly many material zones for each. If you drop on a shirt button, it goes in the button material zone. If you drop on the pants leg, it goes there. If you drop on the pants belt and it has its own material zone, it goes there.

If you're in the material room, then there is a current material in the room. You don't drag and drop onto the material room. You just double click. However, even while in the mat room, you should be able to drop the material onto the pose window and bypass the currently shown material.

Well what do you know. You're absolutely right, this is a bug. I double click a material collection. The Library GUI says "(loading)" on that item, which means my GUI knows what I want to do. It sends a message to Poser telling it what I want, but nothing happens. The collection does not get applied. It only works at the moment by drag and drop.

File a bug report, please?

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

Food for thought.....

I received a response from SM tech support;

Quote - The Material Room will always work. The Pose room or other rooms, currently you must select the part or figure and then Drag the Material or Material Collection to the Part or Figure and hold over to apply.

The Project team is working on improving this function, but in the meantime they recommend using the Material Room to apply Materials.

So hopefully by SR1 it will be resolved. I'd guess based on the less than hopeful first response I got before the one quoted one - if it can't be fixed it'll go back to the way it was before(Materials only in the Material Room).

Yeah, sorry about the first one :blushing: .. I encountered the issue when I was testing while reading your contact and since I was in communication with one of the engineers, I asked.. Unfortunately, we had been discussing Poser Pro and I was not too clear on the fact I was now asking about Poser 8... I took his response at face value.. until he asked for clarification.

Interestingly.. I relaunched Poser and it started working using the Drag and drop method.

Nothing to apologize for ratcloset. It a minor issue at best from my POV, I'd love it to work properly but I don't mind having to use the material room, been doing it that way for a long time anyway. Thanks for taking the time to clarify things, best of luck to you in your work.
