Wiw, they could merge this with Finding Nemo, and Shark Tales and create a great sci-fi battle and horror movie .

Maybe it;s time someone turned the tables on Mr. Mouse and did a remake of STEAMBOAT WILLIE. After all, that's in PD now.

I agree with your feelings  in your OP Sean, but don't worry , this movie will probably fall by the wayside soon , in the category "couldn't hold a candle to  the original"
like Jim Carey as the grinch  did.

now THAT  hurt.

Nope, they don't.

Therein lies the problem of eternal copyright... the IP holders are damned and determined to milk an idea/concept/plot for every dime its worth, for as long as they can.

If these were all Public Domain by now (like they should have been if the copyrights stayed at 30 years flat), at least we could see some interesting twists to the plot, or the studios, authors, etc would have to (brace yourself...) come up with new ideas for once.

flibbits ( ) posted Mon, 24 August 2009 at 6:56 PM

I've found a part of the script from the Asteroids movie.

Pilot
Oh no, another asteroid!

Captain
Hold steady, fire lasers.

Pilot
A direct hit!  But it broke it into pieces and they're all moving faster.

Captain
Evasive maneuvers, after those pieces.

Pilot
Captain!  An alien vessel is approaching, and it's firing on us!

Captain
Noooooooooooo!

Back on Earth, at the Command Center

Lt.
Sir, Ship 1 has been destroyed.

Commadore
Send another ship, we have to stop those asteroids.

In the Asteroid Field

Pilot
Oh no, another asteroid!

Captain
Hold fire, my father was lost on one of those asteroids, along with my wife.  I intend to find them!

Music:  DUH DUH DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Does the asteroids movie admission cost a quarter?

Speilberg wants to remake HARVEY.

Okay, not as well know as YS, but one of Jimmy Stewart's greatest, greatest roles. The film is perfection, period. I'm not kidding: if you havent seen it, rent it and watch and see if you dont agree.

I can only imagine what horrors Mr ET will inflict on it. Probbaly make the damn rabbit visible.

Hollywood is like capitolsm Borg. They will assimilate and resistance is useless.

If you don't like it (which I don't) do NOT spend money and make sure the reviews get reported to the web ASAP to kill it.

Making sucky movies on old ideas and being bereft of original ideas is Hollywood's stock in trade.  This is more of the same.

Ah, but let's dissect this. For a moment, set aside whatever political and ideological thoughts you bear...

The movie completely ripped the originally presented civics theory to shreds, turning it into some sort of tin-pot fascism. The original was at least interesting and somewhat worthy of debate, pro or con. The movie version made the whole thing infantile at best, and conveniently left out the parts where civil rights are guaranteed to the entire population, etc...

The main story arc - that of a young boy becoming a man, learning about duty and honor along the way - was cast out entirely, and replaced with some garbage formulaic (originally, the guy grows up, gets over his infatuation with the young pilot chick, and finds someone who wasn't as glamorous but far more willing to love him in return - the Hollywood version was, well, typical Hollywood).

They ditched the drop-ship and mech suit tech completely (originally, the soldiers had high-powered mech-armor suits that made each one superhuman, and they were dropped individually from space in their own little re-entry cocoon of sorts). IMHO, Quake 2 (the game) did a better job of copying the book's tech than the movie did, and even they left out a lot.

The movie had its moments (the Mormon settlement getting splattered was a bit of schadenfreude :) ), but it completely misrepresented the original work - much like (I believe) the remake of Yellow Submarine and Harvey are about to do.

JOELGLAINE ( ) posted Tue, 25 August 2009 at 1:39 PM · edited Tue, 25 August 2009 at 1:40 PM

More to the point, Hollywood simplifies the plot until the admen backing the movie (stupid and infantile morons they are) can understand it.

That is why Starship-Troopers sucked.  None of them understood the basis of the plot.  Starship Trroper Chronicles were  100% better and computer animated, too.  ANy knid of science fiction that gets reamed through the blind lens of Hollywood almost always sucks.  Only rarely do people show that good movies make money when it comes to movies out of the main-stream.  Mostly action-adventure movies with explosions, robots, or scantily clad girls that claim to be science fiction make money.

Most good Scifi movies like Bladerunner, Gattaca, 2001: A Space Oddessy and others of similiar ilk get pushed onto the back burners and covered by the studios in favor of commercial successes that miss the mark from a dramatic stand point.

That is the 'why' of Hollywood stripping what makes a good story GOOD out of almost every novel to movie production ever done.  This is being rethought after the staggering success of the Harry Potter novels being translated into movies that capture the feel of the books.

I'm not much on fantasy stories, but in twenty or thiry years I would NOT be surprised to see remakes of all the Harry Potter movies by people convinced they can do it better.

AND so it goes in moviedom.

I agree, perfectly. Hollywood is actually capable of making a damned good SciFi flick once in awhile. Problem is, they would prefer not to. For every BladeRunner, Fifth Element, or Equilibrium, there are 50 warmed-over sequels like Transformers, sheer dreck like Independence Day, and utterly crap remakes of good films like The Day The Earth Stood Still.

True, and it all gets pushed through the sausage-grinder of having to squeeze a complex novel into a 2-hour (if you're lucky) timeframe. Good luck getting a decent version of Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy into that time slot. Hell, they have a hard enough time as it is packing in a short-ish Philip K. Dick story into that slot - and with very few exceptions (like BladeRunner), even those attempts usually turn out to be an utter abortion.

This usually winds up leaving me nodding my head off in agreement of MST3k (and hell, yes I miss that show, damnit!)

I don't think it's because they have no shame, I think it's because that most of the current hollywood writers and directors have the combined creativity of a dimwitted simian.  The majority of the rest are producing junk that is artful enough to win an award, but not something most people would want to watch.

Take the star trek remake, they decided to do time travel and an alternate universe.  In other words they rehashed the two worst plots in the series and redid one of the most common recurring themes.  Of course the movie was popular and everyone got their backs patted so you can expect to see something that bad again.

WARK!

Writers and directors are to blame, yes...but how about producers?  Has anyone seen the producer behind avatar..Jon Landau? He's pimping it like he did Alien 3 and that is a bit unsettling.  For me, these guys are like politicians...they keep popping up every chance they get spouting nonsense and bringing the same tired direction to every production.  I had so much hope for this movie since Cameron was directing, but looks it looks like more great source material and talent being run through the Hollywood grinder.  Regarding the Starship troopers fiction, I always though Armor by John Steakley was far far better source material anyway for a movie. There are so many good novels out there its sick.
