Anyway to speed up the rendering of a scene with lots of trans maps in it, without degrading the quality too much?

For certain things you can get away with unchecking "Visible in Raytracing" on the Properties tab.  Items this works well with are tight clothes like stockings and sometimes hair.  Hair with a gazillion trans mapped planes can really slow down raytraced lights especially AO lights.
