Subject: Animating transparency

I'm using blender 2.49 64 bit.
When I animate material on an object and keyframe RGB color changes I can toggle the timeline and see the color change when previewing, but when I animate the same material on an object using only alpha for transparency, I don't seem to be able to preview when I toggle the timeline. I can see the alpha slider move in the buttons window but no change in the preview. When I actually render the animation I can see the alpha change. Is this normal or are there just some animations that cannot be previewed, or am I doing something wrong.

This is normal, the preview barely reflects what you are going to get when you render.
