Subject: Question about working between Photoshop CS3 and CS4.

A college class that I'm in is requiring us to work on a project in Photoshop (which is no problem for me). The college is already upgraded to CS4 but at home I'm still running CS3. So here's my problem. Is there a file type to save my Photoshop project in so that when I get home from working in the CS4 environment that will work in CS3?

 Should be fine as .psd is the native file format for Photoshop... you will have brush issues as you can't use CS4 brushes in CS3 (or any downward versions...) but if i do remember there was an option to "maximizing compatibility..." in the preferences. this is to allow the layered PSD file be used in other programs and earlier versions of PS.

i never really had to use it but if you want to try saving both methods and see if you have any problems.

bear in mind, saving with the "compatibility" option increases your file size by a bit.

Thanks Scott. I tried the regular .psd format along with the "Maximize Compatibility" option. It still didn't work. I'm not sure why because this hasn't happened in previous versions such as when I worked with CS2 and took the file home to work with version 7. Do you think maybe I should try the .psb file option? I'm not even sure what that file was used for, maybe really early versions of Photoshop. Any other suggestions?

One thing I can think of is maybe I should download the latest updates to CS3, because I haven't downloaded any since CS4 was released.

Hello, I regularly work between cs3 and cs4 and I never experienced this problem. PSD should be absolutely fine, are you sure the file is not corrupted? You could also try saving as pdf or tiff (with all the layers, not as a copy) it should work fine.

Same here, I've been able to go back and forth using layered .psd files without issues.

A trick to use CS4 Brushes in CS3: in CS4, paint each brush on its own layer. Open that .psd file in CS3, and then define a brush preset for each layer, one at a time. It can be tedious, but is a workaround. I just did this between CS4 and Photoshop 6 for a small brush set I made in CS4, worked fine.

I have CS2 on one drive (running Tiger) and Photoshop CS4 on the other (running Leopard). No trouble opening CS4 images in CS2.
