"What 3D Program Should I buy?" Not one person here can really tell you what's best for you, as everyone has their own taste in workflow. Try the demo or learning edition of the program you're interested in, this is the only way to find out which programs you like.

Epic Games has released the Unreal Development Kit for free. Anyone aspiring to be a modeler for a game company may want to check this out, as it provides all the tools you'd use to create an Unreal 3 Engine game and would allow you to show your models in a relevant way. In related news, Gnomon Workshop has an upcoming DVD on working with the Unreal Engine to make environments/characters and scenes for your game.So have a look at the UDK - I picked it up yesterday, as I have been dying to do some game res stuff and this would be a good time to give it a try. It'll be nice to have in my next demo reel a few models rendered in the Unreal Engine!
