Subject: Minor annoyance, but... why does P8 rearrange the material order...

RobynsVeil ( ) posted Thu, 12 November 2009 at 8:36 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 5:39 PM

...for Victoria 4, and how can I change it back?

I opened into the Poser File Editor a P8-"corrupted" Pz3 and manually rearranged the materials back to what I'm used to seeing, but when I open the file again in Poser 7, they're back to the P8 non-order.

Questions:
--Is it just me, or do others find this really annoying?
--Why is P8 doing this? The new "order" is very much a disorder, and I can't find my material in the list anymore without extensive searching. Is this by design or by oversight? (Please say "oversight", if it's by design, it's diabolical!)
-Is there something (some preferences list or whatever) that decides what order materials for given figures appear in, and if so, where is that information saved, and can one change it?

I can't see myself doing any serious work in P8 until it matures a bit: the interface is fairly awkward and to me far more limiting than P7's... probably because I haven't sat down with the manual yet, but anyway....

Have You reported to Smith Micro?

RobynsVeil ( ) posted Thu, 12 November 2009 at 8:46 PM

No sir... I thought I'd check and see if I'm the only one that has issues with this "feature". Hate to be a whingeing bitch about it... since they've probably got much bigger fish to fry than a minor issue like this one.

And No.  I don't think that SM will consider it a minor Prob..  Hows things in sunny Qland?

Where I am in Suburbia South BrisVegas, a croc would stir as much interest as a tyrannosaurus rex, to be honest.

I might have a go at reporting this then, if you think it's worthwhile doing, Noel. Has anyone else encountered this, or do most Poser folk avoid going into the Mat room at all costs?

A lot of people are terrified od going in and doing the wrong thing..  P8 has some issues re Materials,
hanging,  crashing, etc.  ByTheWay  Do You have SR1 installed.?

RobynsVeil ( ) posted Thu, 12 November 2009 at 11:28 PM

Yes, I do (have SR1 installed, pretty much the day it came out)... keen to see if SR2 is going to fix things.

Even then, I think I'll be a bit slow to migrate to P8. I went from P6 to P7 from one day to the next: what a massive difference. It had features I loved, it was fast, it remembered what i was doing. It was worth every penny of the upgrade.

However, the jury is still out on P8. I can see a lot of features that bear getting my head around, but I'm still fiddling with nodes and all these incredible tutorials / threads / eye-openers here on the forum that I haven't time for something that is basically someone else's workflow idea.

I just uploaded a V3 figure that I made in Poser 5, just had to locate the .obj.  After that everything came through, check the material room and everything that was there in P5 was there in P8.

Haven't saved the character brought up.  However I don't expect that P5 will be able to recognize stuff because the figure is now advanced beyond that of P5.

When I just had Poser 5 and had clothes designed for V4, a statement would come up stating that the clothing was different than expect, but it would try and get everything.  That would probably be the same for translated P7 figures, P7 would have a hard time recognizing everything.  Jan

Was the material order different for V3 in the material room dropdown list to what you were used to in P5, Jan? Just curious.

Before I suffer from foot in mouth disease,  My definition of the dropdown list may be different than yours, mine is say when you select the head, you click on the drop down list and get skin scalp, skin head, lips, nostrils, teeth, gums etc. or if you have a dress on, the drop down menu lists say dress, hem, sleeves etc.  If that is what you are referring to than yes both Poser 5 and Poser 8 is the same.  If you are referring to the Poser Surface and the nodes that are attached, they are also the same.  If you are referring to something different, I need to learn that, RV.  Jan

I'm not sure which list you're talking about either?

Is it, as Plutom says, the "skin face, skin scalp ect list - or is it the one with the paths? The list of materials you've loaded into Poser after a restart?

I'm sorry - I'm being my usual self: obscure.

If I load a Pz3 scene that I created in Poser 7 into Poser 8 that has a Victoria 4 figure in it and save that scene in Poser 8, then try to open that scene in Poser 7, and then select the Victoria 4 figure and go into the material room, under the Victoria 4 Object, the Materials list no longer has the InnerMouth, Teeth, etc at the top. Instead, it starts with SkinHip, lists a few skin materials, then something else, the face/lips/nostrils are together there somewhere in the middle, and so on. Not the order they started off with at all.

So, I end up spending a lot of time looking for the Eyebrows material and the Eyelashes material - they're all higgledy-piggledy all over the place.

If the re-ordering were done based on the 1_, 2_ etc prefix, then at least it would kinda make sense, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I hope I kinda made more sense this time.

My Poser 5's and Poser 8's material drop down lists are the same for V3.  I'm wondering if Poser 7's list is actually designed differently.  Try one V4 figure for P7 and another V4 figure for P8 and see if the drop down lists are the same or not.  Jan

I can't because I don't have P7, I jumped from P5.

RobynsVeil ( ) posted Fri, 13 November 2009 at 9:48 PM

Thank you for your reply, Jan. Looks like it might be a V4 thing, then. I'll have to load V3 (geez, haven't seen her in ages!!) in both programs and get back to you.
Thanks again...
Robyn

Okay, I'm going through the process of describing the problem to SM, right? Actually went through the process with a fresh V4 and did the following steps:

**Steps taken:
**
Load Victoria 4.2 by Daz3D into a Pz3 scene in Poser 7, SR3
Add morphs and textures
Save this scene (Pz3)
**Victoria 4.2 figure material list in the material room is as follows, and in this order:
**
4_InnerMouth
4_Gums
4_Teeth
4_Tongue
2_SkinHead
2_SkinNeck
2_SkinTorso
2_Nipple
3_SkinArm
3_SkinFoot
3_SkinForearm
3_SkinHand
3_SkinLeg
6_Eyelash
3_Fingernail
3_Toenail
5_Cornea
5_Sclera
7_EyeSurface
5_Iris
5_Pupil
5_Lacrimal
7_Tear
1_EyeSocket
1_SkinFace
1_Lip
1_Nostril
1_Eyebrow
**
Load this scene into Poser 8, SR1
Make some modifications (add a hair figure, change the pose), save scene in Poser 8
Check in the material room... the material list fot the Victoria 4.2 object is as outlined above

**
Re-open that scene in Poser 7
Select the Victoria 4.2 figure and go into the material room
For the Victoria 4.2 Object, her Materials list is now in the following order:

And Now It Doesn't DO it!!!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The order is fine. No different to what it's meant to be. BUT IT DID this BEFORE... I have Pz3s to prove it.

Needless to say, no email to support. Can't reproduce the problem. Sorry to have taken up everyone's time with this when you could be learning more about shadows and lights and IDL...
