Have you guys seen this application yet ?

Looks kinda like CrazyBump with a more usable interface (;

 Yeah, I use it all the time. It's pretty good. Just different enough from Crazy Bump to warrant having it. I also have one called PixPlant. The displacement maps are a bit different in all 3, so depending on your needs it could be quite useful. Crazy Bump is still the only one that can make displacement from imported normal map. ShaderMap does it but they don't quite come out as good.

 Steven....I actually use displacement maps more for distribution mapping of a material and it's darker version. It simulates cavity and AO mapping in quite an interesting fashion. Try it.

I use Pixplant, it makes seamless tiles as well.
I have not tried any other.

I photographed some pinebark.
Used pixplant to generate  some seamless displacement and other maps.
This bark ball can be horizontally rotated with no seam.
Here's a quick render.

That looks neat, but surely not useful for a sphere :D

In this image it looks like some wicked space brain thing minus the testicles (;

Which of course is awesome in it's own right :D

What ! Not useful for a sphere?

The Ents from Lord of the rings, use these kinds of things all the time in Ent sports. Especially good for bowling over evil tree destoying wizards who should have known better. :)

 Here's a rock I made in 3dCoat. Just blobbed a bunch of voxels together and exported it with it's normal map. I then took the normal map into Crazy bump and made a displacement map out of it. I then used brighten/contrast in PS. and then applied it in Vue as a distribution map between a lighter rock material and a darker version of the same material. Adjust the mixing sliders and blending slider to taste.  Nothing to write home about but it lends a nice depth to the whole thing.

Oh and there's no displacement going on here at all.
