Subject: Need a recommendation

sparrownightmare ( ) posted Sun, 31 January 2010 at 8:32 PM · edited Thu, 30 January 2025 at 3:10 PM

As we all get older and the aches and pains of mousing get harder to deal with, our thoughts turn to graphics tablets..  Well mine did anyways.  I wasn't sure where to put this message but here sounded as good ad anyplace.

As the title implies.  I was wondering if I could get some recommendations for a large size (I have big hands), but very low cost pressure sensitive graphics tablet for use in Carrara, Poser, and my 2D programs.

My wife got me a bamboo for xmas, but the pen was too small and that made it very difficult to work with for someone with XXLL hands.  So since my Bday is Tuesday, I thought to treat myself to some useful hardware.

Any help appreciated.

Rich..

First: dont buy a Trust tablet. I have one large size (old model TB1200) and the cursor flicks a lot, so what I always saw is that people say: go for Wacom. If you dont have the money, just wait until you have it. Now with Intuos 4 you can grab an Intuos 3 for a good price.

I use an Intuos 3. The pen is 1/2 " across, slightly more around the rocker button. I have big hands too. The pen is very comfortable to use.

I would seriously look in to getting a hand, wrist finger elastic exerciser wheel . http://www.allegromedical.com/exercise-fitness-c523/power-web-jr-7-p210916.html  Take it from me i have had two carpel tunnel releases on my mouse hand . I use this "Web wheel " faithfully it helps relieve wrist/hand tendon pain. My wife purchased a Intous 4 when they first came out it is a major help at times , the only complaint is it takes up way to much realestate on the desk top  i had to devise a separate mobile cart to hold this giant of a tablet ,you will find allot more arm movement just by navigating from side to side on this giant tablet , Personally i would go for a mid range size if i had to take it back .

Take care of that wrist ,Michael

Thanks guys.  I was looking at the Intous.  The webwheel sounds like a good idea.  I'll look into that as well.

I place great hopes in the iTab combined with futur apps (Brushes or Touch Mouse like), but need to wait for march 2010.
This is only my opinion ;)

I like the Cintiq models because you are working right on the image. Any Wacom product handles smoothly and the pen response is fine. There are a couple pen models with different grips.
I do very well with the smaller Cintiq, but the 21 inch model is probably preferable to someone with more complex 3D projects.
You can get some deals on ebay, but $1500 is the minimum I have seen for this model. (sigh. I am saving my $$.)

Thanks Holyforest, but I'm on a PC.  I saw the Cintiq, but that price ggroup is way out of my price range.  That would be 2 month.s worth of my income easy.  Here are a few I am looking at.  Let me know what you think.

I definitely need a tablet around 10-12 inches.

Great, let us know when you decide and buy it. I want to change mine, but Wacom is veru high price to me too for now.

Yeh, the Wacoms are good, but the Bamboos are too small for me, and the other ones are way too expensive.

I have an Wacom Intuos 2 4x6 and I find the tablet a tad small and would love a bigger one.

I can buy a Bamboo in different  sizes at a local store which are cheaper than the Intuos, so I was wondering why they were so much cheaper and a bit of research turns out that the pressure sensitivity on the Bamboo is not the same as the more expensive series.

So if you want to do Painting and Brush simulations stay away from Bamboo, but if you are using Bamboo for simple drawing stuff or using it for 3D its probably the more economical way.

GKDantas ( ) posted Tue, 02 February 2010 at 6:50 AM

Analog-X64, just a note for you: the new small tablets from Wacom have 1024 levels of pressure, and the pro tablets (Intuos4) have now 2048.
The olds bamboo had only 512 levels... so I think that the new ones are mor eprofessional them in the past:

Here is a good review about it... my only two questions are: work in 64bit win? No pointer flickering?

Thanks GK.  I'm a bit out of my element with Tablets.  I've never used one before, but the old Carpel Tunnel is telling me to get one now and all your help is very appreciated.

Start learning to use your hand that you don't favor the most ! After i had my tunnel release surgery it was an immediate effect on your daily life especially if you are a daily computer user , it took me a good month and a half to teach my left hand to navigate with the mouse, what a major struggle it was , i have also seen arm braces at some ergo outlets that can attach to your desktop so the base of the palm of your hand doesn't get as strained by the weight of your arm , the brace is supported at the forearm , i haven't gone that far yet , but seriously that Web wheel truly works give it a try ! Or it may be time for a couple corticosteroid shots , i used to get them until they no longer worked.

sparrownightmare ( ) posted Thu, 04 February 2010 at 7:40 AM · edited Thu, 04 February 2010 at 7:49 AM

I was born left handed.  However, like a lot of kids born way back in the 1960s, they switched me to right in school.  My left has always been my strong hand, and if I need to, I can still sort of write with it. probably wouldn't take very long to get used to using it again.  I broke my arm when I was 12 and for 6 weeks I had to use my left for school.  It wasn't too bad luckily.

GKDantas ( ) posted Thu, 04 February 2010 at 11:53 AM

Hehehe... I am left, but only after 2 years using a computer a friend asked to me why I am using the right hand with mouse... now I cam draw in the tablet and use the mouse at same time and its very fun.... but if you got a poor tablet like mine, forget, the cursors flicks a lot and you cant have a precise draw or use of 3D space. So my advice here is dont trust in trust tablet. Maybe theres someone from the factory here that can prove that I am wrong... until now, dont buy this one.
