Subject: How to make a MAT Pose in Poser 8?

pjanak ( ) posted Tue, 02 February 2010 at 5:49 PM · edited Tue, 14 January 2025 at 7:19 AM

How to make a MAT Pose in Poser 8?  Mat pose edit is dated. What else is there?. It amazes me that creating a MAT pose hasn't been built into Poser yet.

Also. I have the very well done Glock 19 semi-auto pistol done by  Motokami_Ya (AGM19) It has one major issue. It has multiple materials but only one is listed in the materials room. To access the others I first must open the hierarchy editor and select a part. In order to make a mat pose I would need to be able to access the other parts if using a program. In MAT Pose Edit I can't. So one can one do to edit this character file to show all the materials in the Material room. Listed properly and not using the hierarchy editor.

I use QuickMat available here in the MP (but I don't have P8, although the process is going to be similar).

I've been using it in P7 for over 2 years now and have never had a problem with it.

Easiest way to do MAT files is with Notepad or any other text editor.

Here is how.

I put process in another thead .

In the material room Save a mat or material collection (mt5 or mc6)
copy or move to pose library from Materials library (using windows explorer)
rename to pz2
edit in wordpad or notepad (or other plain text editor)
change mtlcollection line to figure (if its a figure) or actor $current (for a prop)

simple

a material collection will do from 1 to many of the materials for the figure or prop so you can control just what you want changed.

kyhighlander59 ( ) posted Tue, 02 February 2010 at 6:24 PM

forgot about your way Mark, I need to try that one. LOL sounds simple enough.

markschum ( ) posted Tue, 02 February 2010 at 6:27 PM

Changing the material collection is the easiest way I know , it is much easier than it was in Poser 5 with python scripts and lots of editing :(

More people should get used to using the material library because it works reliably on props.

kyhighlander59 ( ) posted Tue, 02 February 2010 at 6:31 PM

I bought some texture sets a while back that all the mats were in the material room and I was pissed cause I couldn't find them in the Pose room. LOL when I actually tried the material collection method I really liked it much better. Don't know why, other than backward compatibility, that anyone would use MAT files.

Victoria_Lee ( ) posted Tue, 02 February 2010 at 6:49 PM

I do both. for users who are familiar and comfortable with the material room and for those who still want MAT poses.  For myself, I like the mat room better.

I like it better as well, after I found the product. LOL but I had not seen it before and it threw me.

markschum ( ) posted Tue, 02 February 2010 at 9:22 PM

It means a change of work flow to start going to the material room and back , it would be nice if the material library was available from the pose  room even if it were only to apply mats

kyhighlander59 ( ) posted Tue, 02 February 2010 at 9:28 PM

I don't know about that Mark, I mean look at the Hair room it's empty. Almost all hair now is in the figure room. Clothing too. The figure room is so full on my system that I have trouble finding what I have. Pose room is the same way. You have Poses and MAT files and most of my MAT files have bad naming in the folder so you don't know if it is a MAT or a Pose until you open it and look.

I welcome the addition of the MAT room, I just wish it was available from the library rather than the tabs at the top.

As of Poser 8, the material library is available at all times no matter what room you are in :)

kyhighlander59 ( ) posted Wed, 03 February 2010 at 6:41 AM

Not been in 8 that much yet. Had it since it came out, just not had a lot of time.

pjanak ( ) posted Wed, 03 February 2010 at 4:04 PM

Also Poser 8 doesn't do material collections any more doing a seearch for mc5 or mc6.. it doesn't exist in P8. It might read them but it doesn't create them anymore.

Thanks fopr the suggestions all. I'll check out my options.

Can you go into the Material room, load textures onto a figure (like a hair figure or prop) and then add those textures to a new collection?

I don't have P8 but that's going to be a huge thing for me to consider before upgrading since I do material collections for my customers all the time.

Okay I think I just spread some misinformation. I just noticed a painters palette in the material room. Click on that and you can save the materialzs into collections. Sorry. I could have sworn that I read that P8 dropped that though. Alas,  since the gun only displays one material in the room as I mentioned before. The collections option is of no use to me.

mc6 is the file extension you should see in the materials folder under runtime/libraries/materials

they are mz5 or mcz files if using compression.

In the material room if you click on + to save a material , the popup asks to save a single material or a collection and if saving a collection you get an option to pick what materials to include.

I would not have expected Poser 8 to abandon that.

Thanks, markschum.  The eases my mind a little about upgrading.

I use Poser 7, I had hoped someone with Poser 8 would reply with a screen grab :(

I haven't moved to P8 yet, either.  Looking at all the problems people are having, I don't know how soon I will.

What problems exactly?

Script errors, script incompatibility, queue manager ... I'm watching the forum here and over at SM very closely.
