That sounds great Reddog, I'm definitely eager to try your scripts when they are ready.
Best.

I've been hard at work on a collection of scripts that import various files. They're still under development at this time but I've made some great progress.
- Read's a CR2 file and creates an armature, extracts the OBJ location, imports the OBJ file preserving vertex groups for the armature as well as vertex groups for all of the material zones. It also locates any textures reference by the CR2 and creates materials for them. Simple color values are ignored at this time and any material containing matching textures are consolidated before applying them to the object in order to compensate (at this time) for blender's 16 mat limit. It attaches the imported OBJ to the armature. An automatic weight painting script is in the works as well. I've made some progress with it however it's not completed at this time.
- I've also had success creating a script to import Morphs (deformations, shape keys).
- Also have an almost completed script to read additional Material files.
Take a look at the samples thus far:

Unfortunately, some hardware failures have slowed me down this week or I'd be further along.
