I purposefully avoided all the hype because I just wanted to see the movie for myself and make up my own mind about it, and glad I did because it had that much more impact with no expectations of what I was about to see.... I love CG art so much I almost had no interest in the story at first, but once the characters, Jake and Neytiri, became the focal point I was all into that as well.... lol Neytiri was so exotic and cute it was impossible not to fall in love with her, and Jake in his simple but straightforward way was equally as memorable.... they nailed it in so many ways...
The artists who worked on that film did a spectacular job, though. I must say I've never seen anything like it before, and after LotR I never thought I'd hear myself say that but there it is.... ;o)

Quote - I watched it on a small monitor from dvd. The graphics were incredible , but there were small problems in the animations if you looked really close.
The plot was a bit contrived I thought but still believeable as science fiction.
I think especially in a movie like that it's good that the animated characters don't look too realistic...
but that's just me I guess...

Seen Avatar at the cinema 4 times and on DVD 6 times. True.
I'm worried about Avatar 2 which James said maybe set underwater. The underwater city in Star Wars was interesting but not spectacular. Underwater scenes are the most difficult to create to hold your interest long. It's basically a desert down there with islands of life. Watch any nature documentary.
Avatar 3 maybe set on the other planets near Pandora. Now that would be very interesting.
I wonder if the Earthers are going to return and just nuke the Na'vi from orbit. Game over man.
Avatar is an ok film - but definitely not a classic story - it's a much recycled plot from about 4 other films (i.e. Dances with wolves, Pochontas, Fern Gulley & Apocalypse Now). Whilst the graphics were quite a spectacle, I did not find myself giving a damn about any character except Grace.
It deserved the technical oscars, but no others. I just hope James Cameron isn't gonna do a George Lucas/Wachowski duo & totally screw it up by making totally pointless or ridiculous sequels.
The plot is rather cliched sf, as old as the 40s and 50s. But the graphics seem impressive. I haven't seen it,. I was going to buy the DVD but I looked at the box. No extras, no bonus features, no nothin. For 20 bucks I'll wait until the special edition comes out.
Sequels? the actors and such already signed contracts for two sequels. Whether they get made or not, who knows. But considering it did the biggest box office of all time, probably.
Me, I just ordered the last three seasons of the 1955 to 1960 TV show Robin Hood. 32 episodes per season. Now that's value for the money.

This movie is nothing but pure magic!
I've been waiting to see this movie, since it's almost impossible for me to go to the movie theater anymore as I get terrible migraine headaches if I can't sit all the way in the back.... so was eagerly awaiting the DVD release and got it yesterday... have already watched it 3 times and again today.... ;o)
The artwork is incredible, so many scenes that are absolutely mind blowing, especially when Jake first goes into the forest and must spend the night there...
The story is also a classic, done many times before sure, but with a new twist and so many opportunities for the CG artists to really show off their work... The are some other great flicks out that show some amazing CG, but this one shines like a diamond and takes it so much further.... I love this film!!!
