Subject: What causes this?

(Shown above: SreeD display engine) Hair props that show up in preview as semitransparent.  The document, figure, and element styles are all texture shaded.  With the SreeD display engine, the hair previews accurately.  But with Open GL it shows as semitransparent.  I have the current drivers for my video card and also loaded SR3 for Poser 8, where the same situation occurs.  These examples are shown in Poser 7.

Note that in the material room, the texture map gets substituted for the transparency map.  Even if I load the transparency map manually, it changes immediately back to the texture map.  In the advanced view though everything looks fine.

The hair renders fine, but it's hard to adjust it when you can barely see it.

In the Render Settings/Preview  you will find Transparency Display settings. Reduce the 90% default to make the hair more visible

I have run into this myself then editing textures, generally it happens if you have material groups with transparency and no texture or transparency map.

Example is if you try to hide part of the hair like the bangs, first advice is to look over all material groups for the hair and see if any of them looks different, in this case just give them the same material settings as the other ones.

One workaround is to change the display style for the hair under display and element.

Only one layer became more visible.  The rest stayed semitransparent.  Weird, huh?

But that's what I said.  That's the problem.  They are different.  Some of the layers are showing the texture map in the transparency map and I can't get it out of there.

Weirder still.  The attached image shows the hair as Smooth Shaded.  As you can see, it doesn't show up at all.  I tried changing it to other styles and they displayed properly.  Just by chance, I decided to go and look in the material room and guess what?  All the transparency maps were now showing in the right place.  The texture map was no longer in the space for the transparency map.  So I decided to switch the hair's display style back to Texture Shaded to see if things were now correct.  As soon as I did that, the texture map popped right back into the transparency space and I was back where i started.

Are the texture map and the transparency map of different pixel dimensions?  For a while Poser had a bug which confused tex and trans maps if they were of different pixel dimensions, but as I recall it was corrected in an update.

Specify which build number of Poser is showing the symptoms.

Poser 12, in feet.

OSes:  Win7Prox64, Win7Ultx64

Silo Pro 2.5.6 64bit, Vue Infinite 2014.7, Genetica 4.0 Studio, UV Mapper Pro, UV Layout Pro, PhotoImpact X3, GIF Animator 5

Oh my gosh!  That was it!
I checked the dimensions of the texture map and transparency maps and found that they were indeed different sizes.  So I made a copy of the texture map to match the dimensions of the transparency maps, reloaded the textures, and all was well.
I saved the figure, launched Poser 8, and loaded the figure.  Everything looks fine there too.
I am running Poser 7 version 7.0.4.220 and Poser 8 version 8.0.3.11793
I thought I'd loaded all the updates.  Have I?
In any case, thanks to all for your help.
