Subject: Installing content to Poser 8

michelvanspeybroeck ( ) posted Tue, 01 June 2010 at 3:54 PM · edited Fri, 06 December 2024 at 3:57 AM

I have recently upgraded from poser 6 to 8. I also bought a new computer windows 7.

I bought two items from the rdnaruntime store. I did wat i used to do on my old system (poser 6/XP) extracting the zip file to the Poser 8 folder.

First windows 7 did not allow this, i was able to solve that.

I was able to extract the content and found the newly created folders in the runtime of Poser 8.

When i tried to find the newly installed content (skintextures and lightingsets) i could not find them in the Poser 8 library?

By the way the items that  work in the library of poser 8 i did not find (or see them) in the appropriate folder in the runtime of poser 8???

Thanks for helping me in advance.

Michel

The easiest solution is to install  Poser 8 to C:, rather than C:Program Files.  Vista and Windows 7 protect you by restricting write access to C:Program Files, and sticking the actual files elsewhere...

During ther P8 installation, what option did you use to install the Runtime??

Seems like a typical Windows 7 case....

Search the forum, a lot of info , also on the item installations you tried afterwards...

P8 runtimes are usually split now. Some parts (program parts, not content) are in the main program folder. But the content moved elsewhere.

Where depends on what you selected during installation, as vilters is asking about.

Could be in "My Documents" or it could be in the Win 7 "virtual storage" folder, which is confusing. We wait to find what option you selected before explaining the weird stuff.

Hover over an existing item in your library window and it should tell you in a tool tip where it really is. (Unless you disabled that feature.)

Also did you install P8 SR3? The library has more features.

 Thanks,

I did that search and indeed it would be a lot better to have Poser under  C and not in the program files.

Can i just move the Smith Micro folder or the Poser 8 folder to C: backslash or do i have to uninstall Poser 8 an do a fresh install?

I think i followed the default choices whilst installing Poser 8 but there where these options concerning using the folder my documents and i always made the choice for my documents. I did install SR3.

The tooltip? Is not enabled  because i do not see the whereabouts when hovering over my library items! How do i enable the tooltip?

At the bottom of the library, click the thing called a Klingon Toothpick.

It opens a drawer full of display options.

In the General area is "Show Path Tool Tip". If that is enabled, when you hover over a label (not an icon) then it will show you the full path of an item in a tool tip.

Also, if you go into the Display area and enable all the boxes, you'll have a details panel like I do here that shows the full path of whatever is selected.

Note - I'm showing the Poser Pro 2010 library, which has a few diferences. But the features we're talking about work the same.

Note also that in my screen shot the selected item is not from my main Poser Pro 2010 runtime, but rather from my old Poser Pro runtime, which I added as an external runtime to Poser Pro 2010, so I would not have to re-install content into Pro 2010.

Maybe you know already, but you don't have to re-install your P6 stuff to use in P8. Just link the P6 library as an external library in P8, and all will be available immediately. You use the Add Library button.

Thanks bagginsbill the tooltip thing works and i saw that the content of poser 8 is under my documents instead of in the poser 8 folder.

I knew that i could link the Poser 6 library to Poser 8 that works great.

I guess it would be best to uninstall Poser 8 and do a Fresh install under C: backslash and then during the installation choose for content to be installed directly in Poser 8 instead of My documents.  In my opinion that will solve the problem of installing new content.
