Subject: Older Poser and Vue settings and props

tsquare ( ) posted Mon, 12 July 2010 at 5:51 PM · edited Sun, 27 October 2024 at 8:11 PM

I have been eyeing an older scene for some time.....it comes in both Poser and Vue formats and is a reasonable price.

The only trouble with it, the elements that caught my eye about it, all have weird angles when they should be round and smooth.  I know there are both smoothing angle and also a way to give an element more polygons in Vue, but do you think these would help, or should I just take the time to make my own?

It is a shame that this bugs me enough that I have hesitated to buy this product, because the overall design is quite well thought out.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Older props that we saw 10 years ago that we thought were awsome we now see as just meh.  That simply means that we can choose to improve the old props, or create better props from scratch.

So is it easier to just buy something nearly great or to spend your time on making something great of your own?  And selling it for that time spent?

Yeah.. I will just take the time to do those elements I really liked the idea of, I think.

Thanks, Shawn

yeha nowadays I fillet EVERY important angle on a model, it makes a HUGE difference for realism :)
alas, since I use RHino, a NURBS modller, it makes meshes with too many polygons ot begin with (even if you know what yer doing and I usually take time to reduce the mesh when complete)

hence, my Hammership ended up with 1,200,000 polys!! eek!
but I cna do close ups and there are no obvious polygonsnal shapes, EVERY edge is filleted or chamfered so catche shighlights, adding much to realism :)

when I made my drow cutlass, I likewise went overboard, modelling in hammer strokes/indentations etc.

any model that could be used up close MUST have the main corners rounded/filleted.
Subdivision inside Vue on most models won't work right. You can try splitting the mesh, it may help the subdivide work.

some renderers have a special ability to add roudning to corners at render time on specific materials, this would be AWESOME for Vue!

Hey Silver!  Hope you are doing much better!  Thanks for the tips!  I use Rhino for some things, Autocad for others.

The elements I was interested in were round shaped, like a cylander, but had the look of not quite enough divisions in it to get a smooth, round outline, so they were rendered with those angles still in there, which bothers me for key items that I want up front.

So, instead of buying it outright, as I liked the design but want the quality, I was hesitant.

Shawn has it right.... I most likely will pick it to death and won't get what I want without a lot of work, so I may as well do my own.

Happy to see you again!  Check your email! LOL

I use nurbs for modeling objects I intend to render in close-ups.  If I'm too picky about an object, it gets rendered as part of the background.  Objects that bug me to death are ones that look roughly made as if lo-poly, but they are in fact very hi-poly.  Those I can't use for close-ups (they look terrible) or for background (because they eat up RAM).

I'm picky about tree trunks.  And will replace exiting ones to save an entire tree from being cut.

Tsquare ta for the concern much aprpeicated :) hope you got my email the other day? alas I get so much spam sometimes it spam kills other stuff too :( All the stuff about the bureacrats and ratbags trying to subvert the XMRV research has got me hopping mad, so I'm just reading, lol

sometime sin post, what you cna do is soften the dges in Photoshop or similar
select the edge area, feather selection slightly
new layer
fill or paint in a highlight from underlying colour but lighter
done right you cna give illusion of a roudned edge ;)

this is one of my standard settings for RHino meshing, however I found a better one but can't recall it off hand, grr
usually I have to do a lot of tweaking on each major mesh varying the settings ot get best accuracy etc

nods at Shawn  Yeah, stuff that irks me will get kit-bashed or altogether replaced.

Silver,  Gah..haven't gotten mail from you... will check again!   Will see which program I feel needed for the elements in question.  I will stick your settings in my rhino folder to remember them!

Thanks!
