Subject: Morphloader, Sculptris and Symmetry

Vestmann ( ) posted Fri, 06 August 2010 at 8:26 PM · edited Sat, 15 February 2025 at 4:14 AM

I just bought Morphloader and I'm using Sculptris for morphing.  Whenever I use symmetry in Sculptris the vertex order gets screwed up and the morph doesn't work.  Is there any way to get around this?  I love using Sculptris and using Symmetry really saves up on time.

There's a tool by kawecki that is said to help in this kind of situation. Search for "morpher" in the Free Stuff.

If that doesn't cut it, I have a program that can fix the vertex order and many other potential problems. But there's not GUI yet, so you'd have to be comfortable with the command line. It is also - in its current incarnation, anyway - pretty slow and requires heaps of memory, which is why I'm not generally advertising it. So if kawecki's tool works for you, that's what I recommend.

Ok. Thanks.  I'll head over to the freestuff to check it out...

I think colorcurvature is working on python script to deal with this issue specifically.

Ok. that's great.  Morpher didn't cut it.  It gave me a different number of faces error.

That sounds like Sculptris trashed your mesh irreparably. I don't know Sculptris, so I can't comment any further, but I seem to remember comments from other threads. Apparently, you have to tell Scultris explicitly not to change the mesh topology or something like that.

Yeah I've tried exporting with misc settings but nothing seems to work.  The problem is that when you turn on symmetry, Sculptris cuts the model in half and shows a mirrored result for the other side.  If I export with symmetry turned on, Sculptris only exports half of the model so I always turn it off before exporting.  It seems that Sculptris messes up the model when putting the two halves together.

That sounds like symmetry in Scultris works similar to the mirror mode in Wings3D. Luckily however, that only changes the vertex ordering and not the topology, so tools like morpher can fix it.

I might give Wings3D a try.  What is the best program to use with Morphloader?  (with well working symmetry)

Hi Vestman!
Sculptris, when you enter symmetry mode, completely changes the structure of the mesh, that is why you cannot load it back as a morph.

But I am working on another script that can mirror a morph. So you can work on one side of the mesh in sculpris and replicate the morph to the other side.

Do you work on an own figure? Or maybe one of the DAZ standards? If the mesh has a symmetrical topology, the morphs can be flipped to the other side without effort.
