Subject: Can't get 3D Paint to work

Hi folks, I've been trying for several hours to get Carrara 7 Pro's 3D Paint to work.  For example, I imported a previous model (made in Carrara 5 Pro into a new scene) and In the Assembly Room, I selected the main body (it shows up in the vertex room so its not grouped).  It already as texture on it.

Now when I select the paint color, adjust my brush, ensure that the transparency is zero etc, I attempt to paint the nose black, the circle moves around the model but no color is generated.

To make matters frustrating, sometimes I can make a simple sphere in the vertex room, open the assembly room, select an over all texture and it will show up, then the 3D paint program works--bangs ones head against the desk.  Any ideas????  Jan

It all has to do with UV mapping. Not all models are created (or mapped) equal. Carrara needs a defined UV map to know where to put the paint. Some free models have absolutely atrocious UV maps - the product of a conversion software. Models like that, including some that ship with Carrara need to be remapped.

Objects made from within Carrara have a cogent UV map because Carrara authored it.

Thanks for replying Mark, that was the first thing that I thought too, even with a model made in Carrara 5 Pro like the one shown (It was one made by me using most of the functions in the Vertex room.

I found the problem (however, it shouldn't be one).  Not all .jpgs are created equal or some .jps don't work well with Carrara's 3d Paint program.

I found one that worked and will be using that one as the base to build other textures on.

That one I used on the above model and the paint function worked.

It could be that my Carrara 7 Pro did not load correctly.  Ninety-nine percent did.  I'm going to do a complete reload with UAC off and using the admin function this time.  Software is such a wonderful thing.  Jan

Well, I reloaded Carrara 7 Pro with UAC off and under admin.  Same problem, some .jpgs work, most don't -- and there is no logical reason why.  So I'm taking one that works as a base, slopping the .jpg, .bmp etc that I want and saving that one as a .jpg--working so far.  I need a stuff shot of something.  Jan
