Subject: Compatibility between versions of Poser: what's changed?

Cyberwoman ( ) posted Sun, 03 October 2010 at 1:20 PM · edited Tue, 30 July 2024 at 3:34 AM

Does anyone have any idea how Poser 7 content runs in earlier versions of Poser? (I'm assuming that it runs just fine in Poser 8/Pro 2010.) I've heard that dynamic hair and cloth don't work in versions of Poser earlier than 5, and a lot of things I've seen seem to indicate that content for Poser 7 and 6 is virtually interchangeble--is that true? I've looked online for some sort of compatibility chart, but I haven't been able to find one.

it's true that poser 4 and poser pro-pak didn't have dyn. hair/cloth, nor could they use any
procedurals (shader trees/mt5).  poser 4 had "hair" cmd, but rarely used, like GIRender in poser 7.

Currently, many content vendors are not offering compatibility below P7.

That's what I'm thinking I might do. Except that it really frustrates me when content is for Poser 8/Pro 2010 only (haven't upgraded because Poser 7 does everything I need it to do), and I hate to cause the same frustration for people still using older versions. Then again, does anyone use anything older than Poser 7 now? I haven't seen anyone mention Poser 6 in a long time, except in tutorials. Hmm...

Believe it or not, there are still quite a few Poser 6 users. When I do freebies, I don't go below version 6 though.

I can absolutely believe there's lots of Poser 6 users. (Hey, I'm still on Adobe Photoshop Elements 2... and the last time I checked the industry was on PSE 8 or something like that.) I'd like to make my content compatible with Poser 6 as well as Poser 7+, does anyone know things that changed between Poser 6 and 7 that might make my content not work?

Content compatability may only become an issue now that P8 has alternate rigging.  I haven't tried using any P8 content in a lower version so I don't know if this is a problem.

Python is the biggest compatability problem.  There was a minor change that lead to some mimor issues with some compiled Python scripts between P6 and P7.  There has been a major change between P7 and P8.  Many compiled scripts written for P7 will not work in P8.
