Subject: The new reply field...

Schecterman ( ) posted Sun, 24 October 2010 at 8:36 AM · edited Sun, 26 January 2025 at 6:05 PM

Two things about the new reply field...

One, it makes too much space in between lines.

Two, it broke Firefox's spell checker.

The first I can live with, but I'd like to know if there's a way to defeat its new spellchecker-breaking "feature".

I had just learned how to use FF's spell checker with the old way, and now that doesn't work anymore.

Otherwise it's... umm... well it's there. I can't say that it's an improvement though, and I have to wonder why fix something that wasn't broken to begin with.

...

Personally, I hate the new reply box and it's "features"...lol. The double spacing is driving me nuts...

Hopefully they'll learn the lesson not to do this sort of change on a Friday so that they can make simple config changes when there are "unexpected" problems.

No double-spacing here, but I can't turn the darned highlight off! LOL Opera's spell checker is working properly, but I've never gotten FF's to work. And now we can right-click with both!

MagnusGreel ( ) posted Sun, 24 October 2010 at 11:42 AM

I can spell check in FF and have it able to copy and paste at last. the double spacing's a bug I hope they fix soon tho. I do like the fact we can resize the reply box (grab the bottom right corner and drag)...

Okay I see now in Firefox I have to right click and manually select Check Spelling from the list. Didn't have to do that before, but ... whatever.

...

scanmead ( ) posted Sun, 24 October 2010 at 11:53 AM

Ok, clue me in... how I do I get FF to check my dubious spelling?!!

LaurieA ( ) posted Sun, 24 October 2010 at 11:55 AM

Before, spellchecking worked for me as I typed in FF. Unfortunately, that's a thing of the past :(

MagnusGreel ( ) posted Sun, 24 October 2010 at 12:06 PM

select word, right click, check spelling.... all the right click menu's are working for me...

DreamerZ_Loft ( ) posted Sun, 24 October 2010 at 12:13 PM

To get around the double spacing problem you can use SHIFT+ENTER in IE, don't know if that works in FF though. :)

The size of the font is WAY too small though, have to remember to change it every time I try to post.

scanmead ( ) posted Sun, 24 October 2010 at 12:23 PM

hmm... something's missing in my FF, then. Opera checks as I spell, and appears in the RC menu, but not with FF. Maybe it's some of the security plugins I have.

scanmead ( ) posted Sun, 24 October 2010 at 12:27 PM

Ah hq! If I RC before I start typing, the Check Spelling is there, and it works as I type just like Opera! All these years, I never thought of RC first. D'oh!

You shouldn't have had to, it should be automatic in FF, like it is in every reply field on every forum on every site in the world except for this one.

Note that I ignored the darned thing, and wrote "Ah hq"... It still balks at Paste now and then, but allows it if repeated. Opera is still functioning better here.

To tell the truth, compared to what we suffer at work, working off a remote server on the other side of the continent, this isn't bad at all. At least there isn't a 2-second lag that causes you to misspell passwords.

it appears they still don't allow embedding flv/swf (excepting in sigfiles), but maybe they're gonna go with html5 (h264).  I haven't tried embedding one of those yet.

I think it's a good thing that Flash and movies can't be embedded in posts (links are best for that sort of stuff) and sincerely hope that embedding will never be allowed (far too much room for mischief).

Sounds cool. The FF spell check thing is okay once you realize you have to manually select it...

But this excessive spacing between lines is killing me. :D

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Tue, 26 October 2010 at 5:10 PM

no, it sez "html4/loose.dtd" at top of page, hence they ain't supporting all iphone/ipad features yet. the deal with these h264 m4v (mpeg4 standard) is that they're often 200K or less, hence they would fit in the "attach a file" limits, should 'rosity decide to go to html5.  I agree, they should disable flash embed in both sigfiles and forum msgs.  1990s bug-prone technology.

StaceyG ( ) posted Thu, 28 October 2010 at 3:21 PM

Just an FYI on a few fixes and we will be working on more.

The default font is now a little larger

There is now the added "image" button in the editor for you to post an image in a forum post

There was a temporary semi fix for the spacing issue. It's not perfect or permanent but at least until this can be completely fixed it's a little better.

Thanks

ThunderStone ( ) posted Thu, 28 October 2010 at 3:40 PM

Yeah, right... default is still germ size. At least I can use the magnifying glass to see what I've typed so far. As for the adding image button... That's not even worth the button because you can't use it to upload and insert the image into your typing... Sure you can go the other way and use the bottom form(Attach file form) to upload the file but still it will not be where you want it. Moot point???

So far all of these changes have not made things nearly as good as I think some had thought. The place is becomming a mess.

Well, the default font size has changed. Bigger than it was, so I can see what I'm typing without the aid of the magnifying glass. And yes that old saying comes to mind in this case... A LOT!!!

but it was broke. right click menus didn't work properly in firefox. opera had issues. Ipads could not post. etc etc etc. give it time for them to iron things out.

Well, thank the coders for me. Opera is fully functional, FireFox is playing much nicer here, and the glitches were minor, and quickly resolved. I didn't mind the limitations before, but it's better now. Change is a good thing.

Those are things that needed fixed. The reply field was sort of not that big a deal. My issue is that stupid myspace/facebook link that drops down and does not go away when you try to view a product readme. But then it also has a bleed over when you try to search a vendor, etc.

After a while you just adjust. :P LOL!

Content Advisory! This message contains profanity

"if it ain't broke, don't fix it" It's been said before, but I don't think it has sunk in yet. Please go back to the old editor that worked!

A few (very few) people have suggested that the new editor is an improvement and fixes some problems in FireFox. They must be living on a different planet than I am!

I am really furious at the new editor. :cursing: It is total crap and makes life here at Rosity a misery.

Whilst using a context menu option will sometimes highlight spelling mistakes in FF, it still does not provide the alternate spellings, because a right click on a word brings up the editor's context menu, not the FireFox one. The FF spell check works on every other site I use, so I don't see any excuse for it to be broken on this site!

I used to be able to drag and drop the smilie icons. That no longer works, and I have to use the text versions.😠

The double spacing is driving me mad. And no, Shift+Enter does not solve the problem if you are pasting code in pre tags.

This
text
is
single
spaced
in
pre
tags

In the old editor I used to be able to do Right Click and "Select All". That does not work in the new editor, and is another annoance.

In spite of what has been said, I can't see anything that workes better in the new editor, or that has been "fixed", and a lot of things now work worse, or don't work at all. I didn't have any problems with the old editor, but I can't stand the new one.

Please burn the new editor, and go back to the old one that worked!

Seriously I find where I visited RO daily, often 3-5 times. I now no longer come here even every other day! The pages are sooooooo slooooow to load and I am personally sick of constant changes. It is almost too much trouble to even try to get on here. Plus the damn drop downs always capture the cursor, and stick open.

Total pain in the rump to visit. Takes forever to make a comment on any gallery image, often hangs up and then goes to the old white page "cannot be displayed" issue.

Since the changes that have been taking place at RO, the last time I tried to make a purchase the check out page hung up and I had to go through it again, only to have it say the coupon was then invalid. Contacting RO does not get it back, so you see where it feels like it just isn't worth it. Does that also say something? Maybe coupons are not as great as they might seem, compared with these problems.

:P

renderosity looks very old style. Like a site made in 1997 that didnt change. Old style is ok if it's fast and without problems. But it's not.
