Subject: If Its a Spade Call It a Spade

shorterbus ( ) posted Wed, 03 November 2010 at 7:32 AM · edited Thu, 12 December 2024 at 3:00 AM

I needed a pair of pajamas for V4. I did a MarketPlace Search for "pajamas" and six items turned up - two having nothing to do with pajamas, three were textures for lingerie, one was pajamas for kids (as if!) and one was pajamas for one of those half-human-half-larvae things somebody out there must buy. What? This huge site and no pajamas? I tried again, only this time by accident I left off the "s" on pajamas and TrekkieGirrrls neat pair of pajama (sic) came up and I bought them - plural.

My point being - I cannot count how many times I've had my credit card in my eager little fingers anxious to purchase whatever item my muse set me upon, done a MarketPlace Search for it and found nothing even remotely like I was hoping for. Then, a few days later (long after the desire for that product has slipped away and my credit card has been wasted on groceries), I stumbled upon exactly what would have done the trick. Why? Usually because in his sales pitch the vendor never mentioned what it was he was actually selling. If I'm looking for a set of indecent armor for V4 (and according to the galleries, who isn't?) if you call it "The Misty Veil of Tears of Agorababa" that sounds nice, but unless you admit somewhere that it's a suit of "armor", it will never show in the search engine.

There, that's my rant. Give me a minute and I'll have another.

It's not necessarily the fault of the search engine ... more the fault of Rendo's testers and checkers.   A useful and accurate description (that will work within the existing search engine!) is one of the things they're supposed to check for.

I searched "pajama" rather than "pajamas" Sometimes you need to put in a few different variants of the word until you get a good hit. I tend to have better luck with singular form of words than plural.

On this side of the pond we spell it 'pyjamas'. Neither spelling is the correct one, they're simply alternatives. 'My' spelling results in a big fat zero in marketplace search, to save you the bother.

The word derives from the Persian payjama meaning 'leggings'.

Surely every one knows that if you call it a spade I'll call it a shovel, and the modeler will have made an entrenching tool? ~lol~

I have a long standing gripe about mis-categorized items in the Marketplace.  It really gets my goat to find textures for clothes included in the Clothing category, for example.  There are even texture sets in Original Figures, fer Crissake.  I also don't think it's right to put vehicles and weapons in Original Figures, since they have their own categories, but there are plenty.

I put forward the suggestion that correct categorization should be a strictly enforced submission criterion.  So far, nowt.  Oh well.

The old marketplace search worked better.

SoulTaker, don't even get me started there - some of these vendors are on a quest for immortality, I think, though immortality on a hard drive is about as hopeless a thing as you can imagine.

Grappo2000, that's how I stumbled upon it. Otherwise I would have to have been looking for pajama bottoms or pajama party.

OT, but...

Once upon a time in the land of Oz (Australia), a friend of mine saw a notice on a chalk board outside a pub "Pajama Party here tonight 8:30". "I'll go for that" he said, and duly turned up at the pub at 8:30 in his pajamas. Unfortunately he was the only one there in pajamas. It turned out that "Pajama Party" was the name of the rock group playing at the pub that night.

Groucho Marx famously shot an elephant in his pajamas.

How the elephant got in his pajamas, we'll never know.

I think VaL3d did a PJs set over at daz.

But yes, categorizing of clothing items could be better.

When using almost any search engine, remember to use ALIAP:

As Little Information As Possible

If you get too many hits, incrementally add more and more to your search query to narrow things down.
