Subject: Making clothes fit

arrowhead42 ( ) posted Thu, 23 December 2010 at 11:19 PM · edited Mon, 02 December 2024 at 4:59 AM

Hi everyone. I'm a somewhat seasoned vet at Poser, although my level of knowledge is infantile compared to most folks here in the forums. Thus the following question:

I have a pair of Boots called "Kickers" for Michael 3 (they're part of the clothing/props set called "Privateer" from Daz) and I need them to fit Michael 4, as part of a piece I'm working on.

Just to see what would happen, I loaded them and conformed them (they're .cr2 files) to Michael 4. They're not too bad.... they could definitely look a lot worse! The worst part is that the feet of the boots are twisted sideways, once conformed to M4. The look might be passable from a distance, but any camera angles that show the boots from a medium or close distance, will make it very obvious that they're messed up.

Is there a way to make them fit M4? I'm already doing a mish-mash of different clothing items for M4 to get the look I need. Unfortunately, I don't have a pair of big, clunky, tough-guy looking boots for him. But the boots described above, for M3 are exactly what I need..... if I can somehow get them to fit him. Is there a (not too difficult) way to do it?

Thanks,

Steve

Is it an extreme pose?  Could just parenting them work?  Wish I knew more to help you out there.

The rig for M3 is not really that close to the right for M4.  You need the conformer to have the same rig (or nearly the same) as M4 for them to follow the figure when it is posed.  The geometry of the conformer probably needs to be adjusted to fit the new target as well. Wardrobe Wizard and Crossdresser are utilities that can convert a piece of clothing, both changing the rig and changing the geometry.  Wardrobe Wizard is included with Poser 8+, Crossdresser is a separate app (pretty cheap though).

If you doesn't has the tools mentioned by pjz99, you can fit your boots model at zero pose then make a separated cr2 out from M4.

Morphing clothes works like a charm, and works for any figure, and you don't have to buy new or other licences for each figures.  Never had any problem with this one and it's the best thing I've ever purchased.  Copy/paste url above (sorry, don't know how to make a link  in this new Rendo forum script).

While Morphing Clothis is a great utility, it doesn't adjust the rig at all - which is actually a good thing in samerig-to-samerig situations, just not in the case where you have a conformer rigged differently from your goal.

Mesh difference?  I'm not knowlegeable when it comes to mesh, rig, etc.. lol, so I'm curious.  I'm not even sure if "rig" is just a slang for mesh or whatever it is you guys do to make clothes.

Rigging is the process of setting up bones to deform (bend) the mesh of a model similar to how real bones in a person's body do.  It is done in the Setup room and with the Joint Editor in Poser.  In DAZ|Studio you have to look into the Figure Setup Tools, these are not included in the base version, although there is a minimal version that is pretty cheap ($15).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8jxSOL_MAM (Phil Cooke's rigging tutorial, part 1 of 3, watch all 3)

Stuff that has bones is called a "Figure" and is usually listed in Poser's library in the Figures section.  Stuff without bones is called a "Prop" and is listed in the Props section.

Conforming clothing is a model of a piece of clothing that is rigged the same way the character figure is rigged, so that it can be Conformed onto the character, and then the character can be posed and the conformer will follow the same pose automatically.  For this to work, the rig (the skeleton, the bones) has to be pretty much exactly the same as the character figure, although it can be extended for things like skirts or pieces of the garment that stand away from the body.  All the major bones, like the shoulders and thighs, have to be positioned and sized the same as the character figure, or when the character is posed, the garment won't bend the same way.

Also, the mesh (the polygons, the geometry) has to be positioned appropriately for the bones to affect them; if you're converting a garment from one figure to another, and you adjust the rig but you don't adjust the mesh, then the polygons of the garment will often be too far from the bones that should bend them, and the polygons won't be bent as the bones move.  This is what is meant when people say the base mesh of the garment has to fit the "base morph" of the target character.  This is also why, when you're modeling a garment, you have to use the default un-morphed un-posed character figure as a reference.  If you model a garment around a heavily morphed character, it will be much harder to rig... as I realized on this project - it was one of my first and I didn't know any better, so later on when I had done a few more things THE RIGHT WAY, I realized why it was so hard to rig that earlier one.

The big difference between Morphing Clothes and stuff like Crossdresser is that Morphing Clothes does not touch the bones, it just adds morph targets to a garment.  If the rig (bones) of the garment does not match the rig (bones) of the character it is conformed to, it isn't going to pose correctly even if the morph fits perfectly at zero pose

That makes a lot of sense, pjz99, thanks a lot! :)
