Subject: " Help me Poser experts, "You're my only hope."

IgnatiusZaaine ( ) posted Sun, 16 January 2011 at 9:07 AM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 1:20 PM

I have a question for all of the Poser experts out there.

I am upgrading from Poser 6 to Poser 7 and I have accumulated roughly 16 GB of Daz3d and Renderosity stuff!! They are all loaded into my current Poser6 Runtime folder.

Recently purchased a new machine with Windows 7. Poser6 won't work with that O.S. and if it will, well; it's too late for that. I haven't loaded Poser7 yet because my biggest fear is that I will have to extract and reload all of the countless "things" that I have in the P6 runtime.

Question is; **"Can I copy the P6 runtime folder from my old machine, and paste it into the new machines P7 runtime folder?
**

Please advise, otherwise I am in for a long arduous task of locating and loading all of these things once again.

POSER 6 Does work with Windows 7 ...

I had P6 under Win7 home, premium, and Pro ..so it works .. you might need some extra setting set but thats peanuts .

And i have copyed many many gigabytes of runtime from one poser  install to a other..

Its no 100% sure thing but i never had problems .. just hickups

HERE are my FREEBEE's

I would not copy your Poser 6 runtime to your Poser 7 folder. Instead, park that Poser 6 folder somewhere on your hard drive and link it as an external runtime from within Poser 7. You could possibly cause Poser 7 to not work if you copy your Poser 6 folder to your Poser 7 folder. Since the runtime is all you need, just keep the runtime folder from Poser 6 and link it to Poser 7.

How is Poser 6 not working in Windows 7? I would also advise not installing Poser of any version into your Program Files folder. That causes problems with Windows 7 UAC that you can avoid for the most part by installing outside the Program Files folder. - for example: C:Poser 7 rather than C:Program FilesPoser 7

What LaurieA said, except for the bit about the UAC, you all know my thoughts on that one by now so I won't repeat it..

And the reason avoiding replacing P7's runtime with P6's, you might corrupt your Python Scripts.  There have been some recommendations to actually copy the P7 runtime to P6, then copy it back which would solve the Python problem.  But I would go with the standing recommendation the others have posted, transfer just the P6 runtime to another location on your new computer and then create an external link.

I did serve your father in the Clone Wars, tho...;)

I dunno...I'm taking a different tack (Poser 5 to 8), and am actually going item by item through 5 and asking the essential question 'am I really going to use this?'...;) Much more time-consuming, but this way I don't have a lot of stuff I can't use.

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

Hello out there in Poserville,

I just want to thank everyone who replied to my query.

You have given me some great advice; but as per Laurie A's and hborre's reply, how do I create that external link? What would be the path? And will I be able to view the contents of that link within the P7 library? Or will I have to use File>Import>Poser Document or Prop, to access that P6 runtime stuff?

I'm sorry that I have to ask this question as the answer may be rudimentary, but this is unchartered territory for me.

Thanks for the imput

With Poser open, migrate to the library panel. There is an "Add Runtime" button there somewhere...IIRC, in Poser 7 it is a simple plus sign. When the choice menu opens, simply migrate to your Poser 6 runtime folder, wherever it may be - it can be anywhere you want to put it - and add the runtime to your Poser 7 library. After you do this, the Poser 6 runtime and it's library contents will be added to your Poser 7 library panel, ready for you to access and load objects as normal :o).

And just to add, in P7, make certain that you are at the uppermost level of you library hierarchy.  Otherwise, the Add Runtime button will not be available.  And if you are not sure, just hover the cursor over the button and a help balloon should appear.

Alright everybody, I'm sorry but I made a mistake,

I was under the assumption that my brother purchased Poser7 for me as a BD gift. He is not a computer guy and just told me it was the next version when I told him what I use (Poser6). I was wrong, and he was wrong.

This is a completely different beast, Poser Pro 2010.

I see a separate Library window (not docked on the right hand side, as in P6). On the top righthand corner I see an icon that says "Add Library". IS THIS WHERE I WOULD LINK TO MY P6 RUNTIME?

I copied everything on an external Hard drive from my P6 Runtime which includes a bunch of extra stuff like, readme folders, templates, PZ3 scenes, and many others, Too many to list here. Will the Props, Figures, Textures, Geometries (everthing that is associated with creating each figure or prop or pose go to the right place?) The interface looks completely different from that of P6.

I don't have Pro, only Poser 8, but the "Add Library" button is what you would use. If you load something and it can't find a texture or something it needs right away, it will give you the option to look for it. At least Poser 8 does ;o). I'm sure Pro does as well.

I copied my entire Poser 6 and Poser 7 from a WinXP 32 bit machine to my new Win7 64 bit machine into the x86 programs files and they work fine. All my big runtimes are on an external drive.
