Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 14 10:48 am)
I would do it slightly differently:
That way you only need to select the faces you want to change, once. And you do not need to use the Minus-sign.
Ok, I tried the first method (miilighost) after importing the OBJ as SteveJax recommended and the regrouping went well. Then I exported the OBJ to a new name.
I made a safe copy of my original OBJ and then renamed my new one to the original name so I did nto have to edit the cr2....
I loaded the PZ3 file that has the working test in it, and it finds the obj. I know this because I can select the figure and see the body parts in the pull down list. However, I do not see the figure in the viewing window. I get the red area circle when I click where it should be. Obviously I did something wrong on the export to OBJ. I selected keep polygon group names and I unslected the GROUND tier in the hiearchy...
I am close. I have the orginal regrouping part solved, but now I need to know how to get a working obj out...

If you're not seeing the figure, or not seeing part of the figure, it usually means the names of the groups in the OBJ don't agree with the names in the CR2.
Look at the OBJ file and see if Poser has given the groups "colonized" names like
g Kitty:1
or
g Head:2
Poser usually adds those numbers when it saves an OBJ from a figure.
If so, eliminate the :1 or :2 or whatever from the group names, and also cut the numbers from the 'usemtl' lines that name the material zones.
If no numbers, check anyway to be sure all the 'g' lines correspond exactly to 'actors' in the CR2 file.

What a mess... I check the OBJ file that Pose exported. It changed all of the group names to "Figure 2_Setup". I tried every combination of options in teh export dialogue and the only way to get the group names in the OBJ is to select "Include Exisitng Group in Polugon Groups". (First, what were they taking when they named that option?) Once you select this, it included every group name on every 'g' line ("g Group 1 Group 2, Kitty.....)
There is no way to look at the original and fix this file. It is simply too screwed up. The poser Group Editor looks to be junk.....
I have a properly grouped file in the Group Editor, I just need a way to get it out in a useable OBJ. At this point, I am ever willing to re-rig it, though I don't want to.
What if I import the orignal OBJ, edit the groups as I have done and then save it to the Library? Will it create a new cr2 file that matches the hokey OBJ? IF I do this, how will I transfer the bones from the original file to prevern re-rigging?
I have wasted most of today trying to get this and could use some advice.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Posers group editor. I use it all the time. You obviously took that OBJ you were editing into the setup room which created the "Figure 2_Setup" groups. You shouldn't have if you just wanted to edit the groups of the obj file. The setup room will automatically try turning it into a figure if you go into that room with the OBJ file. Once you've taken an OBJ into the setup room Poser no longer treats it as an OBJ that you can edit. It is now a figure.
When Exporting a regrouped figure.obj that you have imported you only need a check mark in "Weld Body Part Seams" and "Include existing groups in Polygon Groups".
It also doesn't hurt to make sure you haven't accidentally created any new groups by checking the drop down list of body parts. Delete any that you or Poser may have created.
Thanks for the information. You are exactly right. My work flow is what was screwed up. I took the obj into setup and modified the rigging before I got the grouping worked out. (learn as you go mistake). That is where the problems came in.
I did get this working with the help here and from PhilC. I ended up taking the rigged obj into UV Mapper Pro and was finisihed in 5 minutes. Still, I learned a great deal yesterday.

I have a figure that I need to adjust the grouping on. I need to take away a row of faces from Group One and add to Group Two.
In the Poser Pro 2010 group editor, I select Group One, and then I click the minus sign. I deselect the row from the group. (rotatimg the model to go all the way around. )
Then I select Group Two, and try to add the faces (polygons) that I took away from Group One. It will not let me add faces beyond the original Group Two boundary....
What is the method for doing this? (editing grouping) Something so simple has wasted my afternoon. I have found tutotrials on seting up groupings, but none on how to edit them.
Tip for Smith Micro. IF it is impossible to have overlapping groups, then why can't I select a row of polygons and assign them to an existing group? If they were previously in another group, then take them out of that group and add them to the e operator just assigned them to. (that should be simple).
Any experts ouy there than have a few spare moments, please help me out. What started out to be a very artistic day was ruined by technical challenges.
