Subject: Importing a Makehuman model into Poser?

PoalaVandel ( ) posted Mon, 11 July 2011 at 12:35 PM · edited Tue, 07 January 2025 at 10:47 PM

I've created a figure in Makehuman but I exported it as an obj figure. I also imported it into Poser and the figure is already grouped but I have no idea how I can get Poser 8 to recognize figure mesh as a character and not a prop. I'm using Alpha 1.5 not Alpha 1.6 because it doesn't work for Mac OSX.

Do I need to group them in Poser or do I stick with the grouping already established with the imported mesh?

I have Blender also I'm using Blender 2.58 now. I don't have Blender 2.49b installed.

Please help me out. I'll experiment for the time being until I figure out what needs to be done.

Providing that the group names are there, and you say that they are, then probably the easiest way is to write a hierarchy file and bring it in that way. Details are in the manual but you may find this page easier.

Please note that you do not have to use my utility, you can write a PHI file in Notepad and other editors are out there. My main reason in posting is to say that this is the method that I would use and to point you to what is basically a tutorial on how to write hierarchy files.

Hope that helps.

I have imported one of these and then went into the setup room to add some bones. I have had varying results but can get a basic rigging.

I think there is a way you can save a skeleton from another figure and apply it to a different one. There is a thread on here. Sorry can't be more helpful.

In the set up room you can double click on the library thumbnail of another figure and Poser will attempt to apply that rigging to your model.

However:-

  1. The body part names must match exactly.

  2. You will almost certainly have to totally readjust every single joint along each axis.

Going the PHI file root the joint centers will be approximately correct and you'll be editing joint parameters from a default setting rather than an incorrect setting.

The existing rigging method is indeed valid, however in this instance not the one that I would use. Try both, see which you prefer :)

Very interesting. Please show the results when you are finished. I tried exporting the MakeHuman model via Collada, thinking the rigging would go with it. I never found out about the rigging because Poser crashed on import.
