Subject: Expressions using Poser's morphing tool (I never knew that!)

NanetteTredoux ( ) posted Mon, 17 October 2011 at 12:45 PM · edited Sat, 18 January 2025 at 5:07 PM

I was looking at Mankahoo's site, the video where he demonstrates Angela 2's face morphs. You can't see the whole screen, but he is pushing and pulling at her face, and her expression changes. Is he doing that in Poser? Is this some other application? Then it dawned on me: he is using the morphing tool in combine mode. How did I miss that? I checked the manuals, and I couldn't find anywhere where this is discussed. The manuals tell you how to create a new morph, which is cool, but I didn't realise the combine feature would be so effective or powerful, and I had never tried. For other people who haven't figured it out by themselves either, here's how:

Load the figure of your choice, and the head morphs you want to use if they don't come pre-loaded. If you can load only expression morphs, do that, because you don't want all the head morphs to make expressions.

Looking through the face camera, activate the morphing tool. Make sure you are on the "combine" tab, not the "create" tab. Disable all the morphs that will change the basic shape of the head, keeping only the ones that modify the expression. Now you can use the morphing tool to pull the face into the expression you want. Dead easy. Another good reason to use Poser. You don't have to fiddle with endless dials to make an expression.

Yes, the original P5 morphing tool allows one to pull at the actor and manipulate the morphs.  I've never used it much, having found it somewhat unwieldy (like so many of Poser's tools which require direct mouse interaction with the 3D preview... morph brush excepted).  In the right hands, I could see it being quite useful, perhaps more intuitive than fiddling with the dials.

Where can one see this video demonstration?  I'd love to receive useful tips & pointers about actually using the morphing tool.  :woot:

Cage can be an opinionated jerk who posts without thinking.  He apologizes for this.  He's honestly not trying to be a turkeyhead.

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.

Thanks so much for that, Nanette... another feature unsung, little used. And yet with such possibilities.

Ah so THAT is how it's done. I was thinking it might be the morphing tool but I just couldn't figure out HOW!

THANKS!
