Subject: I think it's done

rokket ( ) posted Sun, 23 October 2011 at 5:56 AM · edited Thu, 24 April 2025 at 3:48 PM

I finished my superhero costume. I have 2 different versions. So I am posting this in hopes of getting a consensus. Which version is better. I have one with a full cowl, and one with a mask. I will post a render of both for sort of a poll.

There are still some issues with the costume that I am working on, but for the most part, I am really proud of what I have done. I hope you like it.

Here is the version with the cowl...

I think I like the headgear better but not necessarily that headgear.  Maybe a helmit type?

mainly because he would be too easily recognized with just that little eye mask thingy.

Estherau, I think your strips are looking very good! Just spent a good while reading them. Nice stuff!

thanks for taking the time to read them Larry and I am glad that you like them.

I was quite happy with the last panel I have done so far.  I have a sort of work flow now.  So as soon as semidieu gets the toons working in PP 2012 I will make some more episodes.

Cowl.  The other version is just too close to Green Lantern.

I was thinking the same thing, and for the same reasons posted, but I had to make sure. Thank you for your responses.

I am trying a suit for Sydney to see what it will look like, but I am still leaning on going with the painted texture map. When I get the suit done, I will post it for another concensus. Thank you all again.

Esther, my super low level oscillation blurs out my features, making me photographically out of focus.  Who pays attention to a slouching, nerd who wears oversized clothing to hide a well chiseled muscular body!

I like the cowl the best rokket.

I dunno. I saw the Captain America costume and was turned off by it. I actually liked the tights and cowl he was wearing as part of the USO tour before he started actually kicking butt. When they redid the costume using a battle helmet as the base of the mask, it didn't look right to me, though it was practical. I am going to stick with the cowl, and perhaps change up the texture map on it.

Thanks! I have to change the texture map, but I am happy with it. I may do something about the ear pieces too, but for now, I will leave that alone.

well earpieces were  on batman because he was trying to be an animal - a bat.

what would greenlightenting's ear pieces signify?  Maybe he could have 2 little electrical thingies eg batteries??

just kidding.  But seriously I don't know what he should have there.

His ear pieces are actually communication devices. He has a sidekick, who watches him from his floating fortress. I was trying to build the cowl large enough to cover the ears, and that's what came out of it. I don't really like how they look, because I screwed the mesh up when I was making it. Sooooo, I am going to revisit that later on.

I thought about doing a lightning bolt or something on them, but that's The Flash. Most of the really cool superhero costume ideas have already been taken (most of those comic book heroes have been around longer than I've been alive), so I have to brainstorm a bit and come up with something workable. It's just like the mask idea. Too much like Green Lantern. The orginal costume I envisioned for him had a cape, and I really wanted to put one on him, but I don't like having to run it through the cloth room 12 times to get it to do what I want, so I did away with it.

I am going to keep plugging away at it. I will probably never be completely happy with it. It's the same for most of my other creative outlets. Every time I look at it, I will see something else I could have done, or should have done. But that's the nature of the beast.

estherau ( ) posted Tue, 25 October 2011 at 5:18 AM

nothing is fixed in comic world.  no one who dies is even necessarily dead forever.  Your hero can always decide to get a cape later and you will be able to make up a reason why he just has to have it.

I am going to try to put the cape on him in the next day or two and see what happens. I have to find a tutorial on how to make one using Wings3D, though. The one I used was a freebie, which I couldn't get to work right on him, so I want to make one myself.

I think shadownet3D once had one that was conforming but eminantly adjustable. I have seen one somewhere.

Hehehe... I don't know about that. I don't even have a clue where to start with that. The only thing I am sure of is that I need to make something with a lot of verts in it so it will drape and flow. The first time I tried to make one, it was a single object that didn't do what I thought it would. I started a thread in the Wings forum. Hopefully, I will get a response and can get started.
