Increase your camera "Yon" value. That is the maximum distance the camera can see. Anything beyond that shows up "behind" the background plane in preview. Another way to think about this is the background plane distance from the camera = Yon.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)

I feel a bit of a fool because it seems like a very basic step but I can't find how to do it...
I do not want to delete a background picture - that's easy!
I want the background plane to be invisible in the preview - I want it gone!
My backgrounds are provided by spacedomes or enviroment spheres, and for some scenes I have to make them pretty big.
All too often the grey background plane pops into view and starts annoying me.
The renders are, of course, just fine.
I'm using PP2012 and W7 x64.
Many thanks in anticipation...
