Subject: Parenting a prop, and it moves

3doutlaw ( ) posted Sat, 31 December 2011 at 9:14 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 4:18 PM

I seem to have all sorts of trouble with Parenting in Poser (and in real life, but thats another story ;-) ), for some reason.

In this case I load a prop, move it to the spot (lets say posed on a hand) that I need, and then I parent the prop to the hand.  The moment I do that, the prop moves?  Most of the time its a little twist or something, that I assume is relative to the hand, but I just wanted it parented as is...

Any setting maybe I am missing.  I learned in DS, and parenting in that wa just like attaching, nothing moved.  This is new to me that it is moving.  I don't get why it does it, or how/if I can stop it?

You could parent the prop using the hierarchy window.  Select the prop in the hierarchy and move it to the hand of your choice.  IIRC, doing it with this method will not cause the prop to move.  But I won't swear on that.

There is an option to inherit bends of parent. That may be messing you up.

Uncheck 'bends' on the properties menu also.

If I had a nickle for ever time a woman told me to get lost, I could buy Manhattan.

OK, thanks I will try that.  Maybe that has been my problem all along.  Thanks!

Parenting issues continued....ugh!!!!!

OK, so I load Hair prop (Mitsu Hair in this case), move to correct fit location, parent to head, bend head....and I get some deformed mess of stretching pixels and stuff?  What am i missing?

I have learned everything in Poser9 well enough, but Parent-ing, which I assume is a basic "stick to" just gives me fits!!!  (sorry, very aggravated right now...)

is that a hair with 2 objects?
The upper hair being parented to the lower hair?

And the parenting of the upper hair breacks when you parent the lower hair to the head with inherit bends checked ON?

Nope, there is just one object/prop entry there.

This is fully repeatable.  I've tried now 3 prop hairs.

  1. Load Alyson2

  2. Load Prop Hair

  3. Object-> Change Parent to Head

4)Select Head

  1. Bend

  2. only the vertices that are in the head region are moving.

OK, so this is due to "Inherit bends of parent" being checked, when parenting the prop.  Ends up that Shaderworks Adv Figure Mgr is set to do this by default.   ...and it stays this way, until a restart.

ugh...case solved, Basil notified.

OK, I just ran into this again, and I stopped using Advanced Figure Manager, cause it was giving me other issues.

I think its a P9 bug?

If I parent a prop (using Object Change Parent) and select to Inherit Bends....it deform the object.

Then I undo that.

Then I parent that prop again (using Object Change Parent) and select to NOT inherit Bends...it still Inherit's Bends...  If I then choose to inherit Bends, it "double's up" on the inherit.

I am going to retry this on a basic scene...  argh!

Yup...start with Andy

Bend, twist, side-side and grasp his hand.

Load Cane Primitive

Object -> Change Parent (NOT Inherit Bends) to hand

Cane is fine, parented to hand!

Edit Undo

Object -> Change Parent (Inherit Bends) to hand

Cane is whacked!

Edit Undo

Object -> Change Parent (NOT Inherit Bends) to hand

Cane is Whacked!

...bad, bad Poser 9!  :(

Where do I report a bug?
