Subject: Defaults in CS4

When I convert a closed path to a selection and another selection is present, the dialog box opens with the" subtract from section" active. Is there a way to change this default setting to one of the other options e.g " add to selection"

Regards

Mitch

Many thanks.

Mine only defaults to "new" when there is no other selection present as, obviously, this is the only valid option.

Retrocity,

Have you been able to make any progress with this?

sorry, still waiting to hear from peter (if there's a method, he'd be the one to know!)

i'll fire another shot across the bow and see what he has to say.

I doubt there is a method. It's only 1 extra click. It has to default to something. Either "add to selection", "subtract from selection", or "intersect with selection" if there is already a selection made.

Is there a specific reason why you are making a closed path then converting to selection? If you use the Polygonal Lasso Tool there is no need to convert. It's what I use when removing backgrounds. Magic Lasso Tool requires too much adjusting.

Thanks for the replies.

I appreciate it is not a serious problem, but I posted the question in case there was something obvious I had missed.  It's odd that Scott's program defaults to "New" and mine doesn't.

I use the pen tool because;

 it provides a easy combination of fixed points and Bezier points which makes it easier to fit selections with a mixture of smooth curves and sharp angles;

the points can be adjusted which again helps to get accurate selections.

Mine defaults to New Selection also IF there has been no selection made already.

I zoom in a lot and make more points where needed with the Polygonal Lasso Tool. That in combination with the space bar to pan around the image. Backspace removes the last points made if I mess up. I still have the 4 option icons at the top of page. I flip back and forth with Add to Selection and Subtract from Selection.

Whichever way it works best for you is the right way to do it.
