Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 15 11:01 am)

Subject: Poser loads textures I'm not using-how to get rid of them?

Eric Walters ( ) posted Sun, 15 January 2012 at 1:40 PM · edited Tue, 11 February 2025 at 2:07 PM

I think I've seen an answer to this-but can't find it. I'm using BB's SSS shaders- no spec maps, no bump maps, etc. But Poser still insists on loading all those memory wasting textures. I don't even SEE them in the materials- is there a python script that makes them available for deleting?

 No one?

I think, those textures are located in the PoserTextureCache folder located in your temp directory.

You can set the texture cache to 0 in your preferences. That should keep Poser from saving them in the first place.

But I am not sure, if Poser actually loads any of them into memory, unless they are used in the current scene.

 Hi!

I think it does load them-I get messages like loading LanaMouthBump, etc- when I am only using the skin texture in the scene-no bumps! I use procedural (3d) textures for bump mapping. Shrvdavid on RDNA suggested selecting preview-apply to all-to rid myself of the textures- I'm going to give that a try.

Have a look in unexpected mat zones like preview to make sure that there isn't a rogue shader in there with those texture image maps. I've been caught out by that  - wonder why my figure is using certain textures when i know it isn't.

"Loading" may be a misleading term in the render proress dialog: in recent versions of Poser, that does not refer to loading into main memory but to the conversion of the texture to a tiled mip map in the cache on the hard drive. The renderer is then using that disk cache to load only the parts of a texture it needs at the time into a fixed size area of main memory. The size of that main memory segment is constant regardless of the number and size of textures that are in the scene or in the disk cache.

Open the cr2, pp2 or pz3 file in a text editor and just search for the image file name. That will show if its being loaded when you load the figure or scene.

Remember to delete any unconnected nodes before saving the file.
